Dalyan – 11th & 12th December

Dalyan – 11th & 12th December

I was up at 6am on Thursday 11th December, half expecting to come down to Norman having had an accident. He was fast asleep still and only woke up once I’d got comfy under the Christmas blanket on the sofa.
Outside, Norman was still not out of the woods so I made him some egg to mix in with his breakfast. The weather was fine and looked to be good all weekend. It was just 2 weeks until Christmas Day and only 12 days until I saw Captain Caveman again.
I worked all day from the dining room table, including a Resort Experts team meeting.
Norman let me know at lunch time that he needed to be sat in the chair nearest to me. He could see what was going on but then was snoring super loudly within minutes.
I didn’t eat much during the day as I was busy so, at 5.30pm, I downed tools for the dog walk before dinner. I warmed up a chicken dinner and saved Norman a little bit of chicken, which he loved. It had been another zero spend and no alcohol day so I was pleased with that.
I sat down on the sofa to watch something on Netflix but started to fall asleep. I managed about one episode of Drive to Survive, about Formula 1, before I drifted off.

Gratitude List
1. No accidents from Norman
2. Less than 12 days until I arrived in London
3. Chicken dinner.

By 7.15am on Friday 12th December, Norman and I had been out and we were having some sofa snuggles. Usually when Edna had been with us, she had taken the priority spot for morning strokes but now Norman quietly put himself against my leg and instantly fell asleep. After working in the morning, I decided to pop to the pharmacy to see if they had any Covid and Flu jabs. I hoped to visit people in the UK over Christmas who had compromised immune systems so I wanted to try to prevent spreading anything.
Interestingly, there were no Covid vaccines available but the flu jab was out of the packet and in the back of my left arm before I could say anything else. After, I asked the reason for the lack of Covid jabs and they said they no longer stock them. I asked if I could go to the nearest hospital to get one and they said not and that Turkey didn’t have them.
This was my first flu jab so I wasn’t sure what to expect, I was surprised at the price as I had no idea what they cost;

Balcı Pharmacy
Flu jab 568.99 lira (£10.16)

Next, I went to the bank to ask about insurance for my forthcoming trip to Morocco but by the time I got upstairs I felt faint. I learned that the bank couldn’t do travel insurance until next week, as it needed to be nearer the date of travel. I had a quick trip to the supermarket which resulted in me buying some new drinking glasses to have water in, prices in lira for what I bought;

Migros Supermarket
Onions 7.16
Chocolate bar 19.95
Biscuits 37.75
Chickpea rice 37.76
Marshmallow 39.95
Dark chocolate 49.95
Cereal bars 60.90
2 drinking glasses 84.94
Dates 89.95
Total 428.31 lira (£7.65)

I called at the bakery to get a simit but also ended up with a cheese börek (pastry) for a total of 45 lira (80p) I had to walk all the way back to Jamie’s without passing out as I had started to feel weak so ate the börek outside with Norman. Unexpectedly, Norman had a bit of an incident where he was looking at me eating, he fell backwards down 2 steps then toddled towards the pool, almost falling in!
A proof copy of my new book ‘The Handy Travel Planner’ was meant to be being delivered today to Captain Caveman so that he could proof read and check it for me, but it didn’t arrive.
I went for a walk with Norman after work and, as it was Friday, we went to the pub for a drink. I had a couple of rosé wines and soda at Ren Garden and Norman behaved really well. The total cost for 2 wines and 1 soda was 330 lira (£5.89) but I rounded it up to include a tip so spent 400 lira (£7.14) in total – not bad for a Friday treat.
Back home, I made a pasta dish for my dinner and we saw that Jamie had indeed made his way on to the Maldives flight – he was not going to have to slum it in Benidorm, after all. I let Norman know but he was more concerned as to if he was getting egg in his dinner or not. After dinner, I had loaded the dishwasher and put the tablet in, Norman was inquisitive and wanted to see what it was all about. I explained to him that dishwasher tablets are not snacks, despite Jamie storing them in the fridge!

Gratitude List
1. Being able to get a flu jab
2. Norman
3. Knowing a proof copy of my book was due to arrive in Pontefract, probably tomorrow.

Dalyan – 8th to 10th December

Dalyan – 8th to 10th December

I was so busy on Monday 8th December, mainly with admin, content writing, faffing about with corrections to the page lay out of my book and packing ready for tomorrow.
I had tea and toast for breakfast, skipped lunch and just had a sandwich for dinner. I did quite a few quotes hoping to sell some last minute holidays. My pay for December was lower than I wanted (or needed) it to be and the payments from my books only get paid 2 months after any online sale. Being self employed can be amazing but frustrating at times and Christmas was going to be tight. Luckily, we don’t celebrate or do presents so that would help. Captain Caveman sent me some money so that I could still get my hair done, which was lovely of him.

Gratitude List
1. Having the chance to earn passive income from my books
2. Captain Caveman helping me out
3. Knowing my cash flow would be improving in 2026.

On Tuesday 9th December I woke up feeling a bit more positive and decided to follow some budget gurus on Facebook. I was definitely going to do more zero spend days too. My aim was to get to a more stable point in the next 6 to 12 months. Luckily, I had the support of Captain Caveman who had agreed to work Christmas for extra money.
Norman was very pleased to see me while Jamie nipped off for a break of either the Maldives or Spain (yet to be confirmed). Norman slept most of the afternoon and then we had a little walk, past my parents’ house and around the block.
For dinner I had a bit of a strange noodle soup which looked odd but tasted fantastic; chicken, mushroom, green pepper, onion, vegetable stock, garlic and rice noodles. After dinner, Norman and I had a bit of sofa time and I had to put a blanket over me as I was cold, despite the AC being on high.
At bedtime, it was so cold that I ended up sleeping in a few layers and my woolly hat.

Gratitude List
1. Taking action around my income v expenditure
2. Norman, the dog
3. Spending zero money for the 2nd day in a row.

I set my alarm for 6.30am on Wednesday 10th December so that I could check on Norman, the dog. It was cold upstairs but downstairs was warmer and Norman was still snoring away. I got on the sofa and had a doze until 7.15am when Norman woke for a wee. I had tea and toast after feeding Norman and got on with work while he snored away. As it was Wednesday it was weigh day so I took my measurements and checked my home scales. My measurements were;
Bust -1cm, Waist no change, Hips +1cm and I had put 0.65kg (1.4lb) on! When I got back to Jamie’s, Norman had been a bit unwell so I had to clean it up. I didn’t tell him off or make a fuss and he seemed ok but it’s not like Norman to do that in the house. He also had to have a good wipe down with the wet wipes, which he didn’t appreciate.
I almost didn’t go to Fat Club but I waited until he was settled in his new bed, then went. I saved myself 50 lira (89p) as I had missed the water when I arrived late.
I was almost on a third day of zero spend when I bought bread from the bakery for 35 lira (63p) but knew it was a good move. I’d not had lunch yet so I had an early dinner of the same soup as yesterday, with some bread this time.
In the evening, Captain Caveman and I booked a Manchester Airport hotel room for the night before our trip to Morocco. The Tribe cost Captain Caveman £93.80 for the 2 of us including a breakfast each and was cheaper with Resort Experts than Booking .com, which was nice.
At 10.20pm, the AC was on 30°C but the actual temperature was still only 21°C so I went to bed to try to keep warm.

Gratitude List
1. Norman recovering from a runny bum accident
2. Captain Caveman booking us an airport hotel
3. A very low spend day.

Dalyan – 5th to 7th December

Dalyan – 5th to 7th December

Friday 5th December was one of those stay at home days and keep out of the rain. I got a bit wet in the morning going to feed my friends cat and then I sat at my desk and watched the bad weather while I ploughed through my to do list. At 11am I had beans on toast and a Yorkshire tea for brunch. Not long after, my Turkish phone received a text to warn of heavy rains and flood risks across our province.
In the afternoon I helped out a fellow Travel Agent from another company who wanted some info about Dalyan. The rains came and didn’t stop for the rest of the day so I had to venture out in it to feed the, who didn’t show up.
I warmed up a Thai green curry for dinner with couscous and then found my wool socks and sheepskin slippers to warm my feet. They were cold after getting wet, walking through the water of our overflowing swimming pool. The mulled wine evening at Ren Garden even got postponed due to the weather so Jamie and I decided we would not be venturing out.

Gratitude List
1. Beans on toast
2. Thai Green curry
3. Warm feet.

The rain didn’t stop on Saturday 6th December so I got absolutely soaked on my last cat feeding mission. Even the white dogs did not come out or look up from their shelters this morning! I decided to call in to the Fataç shop to see if they had any wellies. I’d only got pumps which, although had a chunky sole, were totally inadequate for walking through the puddles. As luck would have it, the owner was there and let me try on a lovely pair of industrial wellies which he fitted with some super comfy spongy insoles. They did set me back 1700 lira (£30.36) which was not budgeted for but they made me feel like I would never have wet or uncomfortable feet again. Mr Fataç insisted I kept them on and gave me a plastic bag for my soggy sneakers. On my way home, I sploshed about like a child who’d been told not to go in puddles and it was amazing! I knew that my friend was on her way back from her trip, the cat was fed and looked after and I was looking forward to no animal caring for the next 2 days.
I messaged Captain Caveman to let him know I’d spent a load of money on wellies and he thought that was a bargain for dry comfy feet! I obviously didn’t venture to the weekly market and decided I could make do with what I had.
I made halloumi and roasted vegetable pasta for lunch which was fantastic. I spent the rest of my day avoiding rain and checking on our roof leaks – the bathroom needed a container to catch the drips from the leaking window.

Gratitude List
1. New wellies!!!
2. Puddle sploshing
3. Good food.

I tried my best to have a lay in on Sunday 7th December, however, my body clock must’ve got used to being awake between 6 & 7am as I was in the Wide Awake Club.
I even joined Jamie on a dog walk with Norman as they had felt cabined up and wanted to get out now that the rain had gone. I was keen to splash about in my new wellies so agreed to meet Jamie. As we were walking we decided that we would partake in the postponed mulled wine night at Ren Garden later. Jamie had a birthday lunch to do in the afternoon but said he would make it between 7 and 8pm. In the meantime, I spent my day faffing about with suitcases trying to find my clothes that needed to go to charity. It turned out I must’ve already donated them as I only had what was in one box and one wardrobe! I made a simple but tasty chicken and veg pasta for lunch and finally was able to get a couple of loads of washing out to dry.
I arrived at Ren Garden around 7pm and was chatting to some friends who were already there. By 9pm I decided I had already drunk sufficient mulled wine, which I really enjoyed, and that I would go to Migros for some shopping. I paid my 600 lira (£10.71) bill and said farwell to the people of Ren Garden. Jamie messaged to say he was still out at the birthday celebrations and was sorry to not make it after all. I was quite tipsy so I decided to get myself a ready made pizza for dinner. Here’s what I bought with prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket
Pasta 21.71
Milk 59.90
Dark chocolate 59.95
1 pepperoni pizza 179.95
Socks 388.95
Total spent 700.43 lira (£12.51)

I went home, cooked and ate the pizza and was glad of being in bed before midnight.

Gratitude List
1. Norman
2. Wellies
3. Mulled wine.

Dalyan – 2nd to 4th December

Dalyan – 2nd to 4th December

There was a lack of photos and blog type updates on Tuesday 2nd December as it was a bit of a sad day. I’d fed my friend’s cat, seen the white dogs and watched Captain Caveman pack before midday. At noon I said farewell to Captain Caveman. He was joining Ma, Pa, Julie and Gareth plus a few other Dalyan Dwellers on the flight back to the UK. I was going to miss him – I was looking forward to seeing him later this month and for our trip to Morocco for the first week of January, to celebrate my birthday.
At 1pm I attended more training with Anex Tours and found out that from July 2026 they would be doing flights to Antalya from Teeside airport.
I popped over to Jamie’s to let Norman out and then went to a funeral. It was my first funeral in Dalyan and I was there to support a friend, who’s lovely mother had died unexpectedly. It was upsetting, of course, although it was good to see so many people attend the send off.
I was in two minds as to whether to go to the wake afterwards, but decided to pay my respects. It was actually really nice to share some memories of such a lovely woman, even though we weren’t close I’d been to a few social events and a couple of boat trips here and there. I went home feeling sad for my friend and her family.
I didn’t eat dinner that night and had an early night, going to bed being so much more grateful than I usually am.

Gratitude List
1. Having enjoyed 11 days with Captain Caveman
2. Having a holiday booked
3. Knowing my parents had enjoyed their 3 months in Dalyan.

After feeding my friend’s cat on Wednesday 3rd December I said hello to the white dogs and popped to the chemist. I bought 2 months’ worth of pills for 660 lira (£11.79). Back home, as it was weigh day, I got on the scales to find I was the same weight as last week. I got a phone call and forgot to take my measurements though.
I got busy in the office until lunch time when I had beans on toast and a green tea.
At 3pm I walked along the river to Fat Club, where I had lost just 0.1kg (0.2lb). I swapped my existing magazine for another to inspire me with some recipes and walked home via the shop. Here’s what I bought with prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket
Nut Dido chocolate bar 30.00
Halloumi 96.50
2 Quark 99.90
Meatballs 199.95
Mini Magnums 250.00
Total spent 675.36 lira (£12.06)

I fed the cat and then, for dinner, I made a chickpea and spinach stew which I had with couscous. It was quite tasty and healthy, until I followed it with a mini Magnum.

Gratitude List
1. Animals
2. Not putting weight on
3. Good food.

Thursday 4th December was hardly worthy of a blog post, aside from my interaction with the white dogs on the way from cat feeding. Massive storms with heavy rain were forecast any time from 5pm tonight. I had beans on toast for brunch. I worked, I did the evening cat feed early and warmed up the chickpea stew with couscous for dinner.

Gratitude List
1. Knowing rain was coming but I was prepared
2. The white dogs
3. Good healthy food.

Dalyan – 30th November

Dalyan – 30th November

It was still raining when my alarm went off at 6am on Sunday 30th November. I didn’t go to feed Baby C until it stopped raining around 7.30am. On the way home I checked on the 2 white dogs who were fine but one of them had a half wet blanket.

Back home, I had a cup of Yorkshire tea and decided I would go with Captain Caveman on his Sunday Walk. As usual he’d had lots of people saying they might come but no definites and it’s always hard to know who’s coming when it looks like rain. My parents and several Dalyan Dwellers were going to the Çaliş fair so it looked to be a quiet Dalyan. I was hoping to sit and drink tea but when we got to the Kaunos tea garden meeting point there was only us. We decided to have a walk around the edges of Dalyan, just as it started to rain again. Opposite the tombs is a ridiculous wooden frame with plastic flowers draped over it, which were coming loose and blowing in to the river. I picked up several plastic flowers and put them in a bin. After about an hour and 15 minutes of walking we reached the Kefal tea gardens and ordered something to warm us up. Here’s what we had with the prices in lira;

Kefal tea gardens
1 Sage tea 15
1 Large Turkish tea 20
2 cheese & onion toasties 220
Total spent 255 lira (£4.64)

That was breakfast sorted and we decided to continue along the river walk towards the Denizkızı ferry. We bumped in to Ghislaine and her dogs so had a chat and I found it tricky to walk through the puddles with tons of stray cats round my feet, who may have thought we had come to feed them.

We got home before 1pm as we needed to shower and get ready for a lunch arrangement. Sezgin and Nur wanted us to join them for lunch at a place they love to go to eat lamb. Joining us were Debbie and Mike who we hadn’t had chance to catch up with yet either, so that worked well. I don’t eat lamb but I know that Captain Caveman loves it so I was happy to oblige. Sezgin recommended we all try the Tandır Lamb dish which is roasted lamb in the oven, slow cooked for a few hours. It came with plenty of bread, salad and pickled vegetables so I managed to eat just a little of the lamb. Mike ordered kofta (meatballs) instead but I wanted to try the dish Sezgin and Nur really liked. It was good, and cooked really well. Captain Caveman loved it and we even took some home to have for tomorrow. Here’s what we paid for our share of the meal with water to drink;

Köprübaşı restaurant
1,850 lira (£33.64)

After, we drove back to Kefal tea gardens for a second visit and had a drink and a chat. I paid for the drinks and here’s what we had with prices in lira;

Kefal tea gardens
1 soda water 25
2 Large Turkish tea 40
1 Espresso 65
2 Black coffee 80
Total 210 lira (£3.82)

It was almost 4pm by the time we got in, so on the evening cat feed I took Captain Caveman with me so we could go for another walk after. We were surprised to see people we knew in Sofra bar who were already back from Çaliş, including Jamie. We decided to join them for one and ended up having 3 drinks. Here’s what we had with prices in lira;

Sofra bar
3 Efes Malt 450
3 Red wine 540
Total spent 990 lira (£18)

We didn’t stay out late as it had turned quite cold and we needed to get some rest before Captain Caveman’s last day tomorrow. We walked past a new cafe which Ozzy was opening and would cater for people arriving late from the airport. Before bed, I checked where my finances were on my income & expenditure spreadsheet as it was the last day of the month. I had just about managed to get back to breaking even; I’d spent £780 against a budget of £1,000 so I was pleased with that. I’d also got a surplus of £392 to take in to the last month of the year. My credit card was paid off (as always) and all the bills were paid.

Gratitude List
1. A Sunday Walk for just the 2 of us made a nice change for me
2. Traditional Turkish Lunch out with friends
3. Being within budget.

Dalyan – 28th & 29th November

Dalyan – 28th & 29th November

On Friday 28th November I was up and about very early on animal duty. Captain Caveman was off to Bridge again in the morning so I worked and caught up on some blogging and content posts. Captain Caveman suggested I take the afternoon off but I’d enrolled in another Travelpack cruise training session at 5pm. Instead, we had a bit of a walk at lunch and called to the off licence where we bought 2 bottles of wine for 665 lira (£12.09) to stock up for the weekend.
I’d also decided to arrange a night out at Ren Garden with friends. I’d invited my parents too but they were already booked up to go out with their friends. After feeding the cat and Captain Caveman making us a halloumi pasta for dinner, we got ready to meet Jamie, Vanessa, Leanne & Sonuç. As it was bad weather a few others had cancelled but we had already got a warm private room at the back, near the pool. It was really nice and we did have a laugh. Ren Garden’s mulled wine goes down so quickly and the new cheese plate addition was very nice. Some other friends were in the other room and came to say hello and another couple of fellas came to join us.
Our bill for the evening came to 1,890 lira (£34.36) which included 13 alcoholic drinks and a cheese plate! Not bad for a Friday night out for 2, really!

Gratitude List
1. Good food
2. A night out with friends
3. Mulled wine.

It was a wet one on Saturday 29th November. I went to feed the cat and got a little bit wet and the rain really came down before lunch time. Even our front balcony got too much water on it at once and it started to overflow. I had planned to go say bye to Vanessa and Matt but it was raining so heavily that we decided not to. The Saturday market was not an option for us as we decided it was a day on the sofa.
In the afternoon I baked a camembert in the oven and we had it with some crusty bread. It was so good! For dinner we had a home made sausage casserole with airfryer Yorkshire puddings which we cooked together and was also amazing!
In the evening Captain Caveman and I started to look at holiday plans for 2026, including ideas of me spending the whole of July with Captain Caveman, which would be lovely. Baby C didn’t show up when I’d gone to feed her that evening, in the rain, so I suspected she had someone else feeding her and keeping her dry, elsewhere.
Captain Caveman had organised another Sunday Walk for tomorrow, which clashed with the Çaliş fair and rain forecast so we weren’t expecting many people. I set the alarm so that I could be up ready for Baby C before going to the tea gardens.

Gratitude List
1. Baked Camembert
2. Sausage Casserole
3. Planning some time together for 2026.

Dalyan – 27th November

Dalyan – 27th November

As our anniversary is the Thursday before Christmas but we wouldn’t be in the same country, Captain Caveman had moved our anniversary forward to today, Thursday 27th November. When we woke up it was raining quite hard so I fed the cat later than usual. On the way back, I was delighted to see that someone had bought the 2 white dogs a kennel each and they were keeping dry. I called at the bakery and made it home before more rain. Unfortunately Captain Caveman’s plan to join the Riverbums, clearing the river of litter, had been cancelled this morning due to the rain. I had a Resort Experts team meeting at 2pm and then Captain Caveman and I decided to go out to celebrate our 14 years together. We walked as far as Luz, which does Latin food and cocktails, and we said hello to their very nice dog. Captain Caveman treated us to a cocktail and some nibbles. Here’s what we had with the prices in lira;

1 Argentina Tortilla 360
1 Cheese Fondue 420
1 Bloody Maria 530
1 Hibiscus Margarita 530
Total spent 1,840 lira (£33.45)

It’s not the cheapest place in town but the quality is worth it and it’s definitely not for the Dalyan Cheap Chasers who moan about the price of a beer. We really enjoyed it and I do love the hibiscus margarita there. Our next stop, after a bit of a stroll and a call to feed the cat again, was to the supermarket. Here’s what we bought with prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket
Spring onions 32.95
Milk 36.90
6 eggs 72.95
Wholemeal bread 84.95
Halloumi cheese 96.50
Cherry juice 105.00
Fairy Liquid 149.95
Total spent 579.20 lira (£10.53)

Captain Caveman dropped the shopping back off home and we met back up for dinner at Ayaz where I had a chicken shish with a pomegranate juice and Captain Caveman had a lamb shish with ayran. The food was lovely and it came to just 800 lira (£14.55) in total. Back home we had a White Russian and watched a film on TV.

Gratitude List
1. Seeing the white dogs had new shelters
2. Lunch and cocktails at Luz
3. Dinner at Ayaz to celebrate 14 years with Captain Caveman.

Dalyan – 25th & 26th November

Dalyan – 25th & 26th November

I decided not to bother taking the day off work on Tuesday 25th November as I correctly assumed Captain Caveman would be doing something without me. I fed the cat and had a stroll back via the bakery where I picked up some croissants for breakfast. I hadn’t thought about Fat Club weigh in tomorrow so I’d probably accidentally had a Sabotage Tuesday (again). We ate breakfast then Captain Caveman went to play Bridge. I logged on and did some work. When he got back I made us a cougette pasta for lunch. I carried on working while Captain Caveman lolled on the sofa with his phone until 5pm then he went to the grocers for veg and more eggs.
I fed the cat in the evening, then came back to make a chickpea and spinach curry which we didn’t eat until gone 9.30pm but it was rather tasty.

Gratitude List
1. Croissants for breakfast
2. Spending the evening with Captain Caveman
3. Great Slimming World friendly food.

Wednesday 26th November was a bit of an odd day really. I was feeding my friend’s cat before 7.15am, saw the sunrise and then went back to bed with a cup of tea as it was cold out. After breakfast of toast for me and homemade şakşuka for Captain Caveman I remembered to get weighed and measured. My home scales showed I had lost 0.8kg (1.8lb) this week, which was very surprising given that I had consumed far more syns than I should have! My measurements showed I’d put 1cm on my bust and hips but lost 3cm from my waist – impressive really! Captain Caveman and I decided to have a bit of a walk around and I introduced him to the white dogs, before he went off to the barbers and I went to Fat Club. Captain Caveman’s haircut and shave cost him 400 lira (£7.27) which he was happy with and they did a good job.
Disappointingly, but realistically, Carol’s scales said I had remained the same as last week and not lost any weight at all! I would need to try harder in December to get back to target before the end of the year. I had just under 5kg (11lb) to lose so it was not looking likely that I would reach target again this year.
At 6pm I had arranged to meet up with my parents, Jamie and Vanessa at Ren Garden for a drink. I was surprised to see Ma on the beer and Pa on the water but he’d got a bit of a cold and dodgy tum so was taking it easy after their Jiva Beach trip. While Ma took it steady with a few beers, Pa had a latte but he wasn’t feeling too great. I nipped off to feed the cat and she wanted some attention so I stayed for a little while to give her some strokes with her pâté.
When I returned, Vanessa and Matt had arrived after the pool afternoon with Mark, Kate and Sarah. We weirdly ended up playing games and taking over the front room of Ren Garden’s bar area – and we were loud! Here’s what ours and my parents’ bills came to that night.

Ren Garden – us
4 Red wines 520
5 Efes Malta 600
Total spent 1,120 lira (£20.36)

Ren Garden – Ma & Pa
2 waters 40
1 latte 130
3 Efes Malt 360
Total 530 lira (£9.64)

I’d obviously gone mad on the wine (again) on a Wednesday and was easily swayed when a suggestion to go for food came up. Dad and Captain Caveman decided to walk on ahead to Çağrı to go there but they turned back when they saw it had been open but was closing. We decided Pizza 48 would be a good place, despite it being outdoor seating. I don’t recall us being cold and we all had our own pizza and a drink. Captain Caveman ordered a meat pizza and an Efes Malt, I had a mushroom pizza with a red wine which came to 1,080 lira (£19.64). I was planning on taking some home but it was pretty good and I ate it all.

Gratitude List
1. Weighing less on my home scales
2. A night out at Ren Garden
3. Spending time with friends and family.

Dalyan – 24th November

Dalyan – 24th November

On Monday 24th November, I had fed and watered the cat, well before 7.15am and was on my walk back home when I met 2 of the dogs I usually see by the river. They walked all the way through town, along the river and almost home, with me.
Captain Caveman and one of my friends had planned a hard walk up a mountain which I was neither capable of nor invited on so he had made a packed lunch and she was picking him up at 10am.
I spent the morning doing some ad-hoc work tasks and looking at flights for 2026. I had leftover chicken for lunch and then just pottered about on my non-day off.
By 3.30pm, Captain Caveman was back and had thoroughly enjoyed his Monday walk. He got changed in to an outfit which could only say that he was unlikely to be intending on leaving the house. I left him at home while I went to pick up my coat which I’d finally got round to having the zip fixed on, at Dalyan Tailors. They are based in the square next to Migros and it cost 100 lira (£1.82) which I was happy with. I went to feed the cat and we had some cuddles, she even got on her box for more attention.
Captain Caveman had put ‘normal’ clothes on for the evening and we decided to go to Ozzy’s for a drink. We had tickets for a comedy night at 8pm so we had to look sharp. We should’ve got food at Ozzy’s but Captain Caveman was keen to eat Turkish so we paid our bill and sped off to get food. Here’s what we paid in lira;

Ozzy’s Bar
2 red wines
2 beers
690 lira (£12.55)

We thought Çağrı would be a good bet and it was on our way to the comedy night venue. Unfortunately, it was closed as they had decided to close on Mondays during the winter. We both joked that we needed to just ‘get anything but not China Town’ as neither of us fancied an expensive Chinese and we only had 40 minutes before the start of the show.
Lots of places close on Mondays now, or places that Captain Caveman had thought of were now closed for a break/winter. We ended up having to go to China Town which is a bit outside of my usual budget. It’s not my favourite place but we got served straight away, the food was piping hot and we were paying and leaving at 3 minutes past the start of the 8pm show. Here’s what we had with the prices in lira;

China Town
1 red wine 140
1 Efes Malt 150
1 plain rice 150
1 Won Ton soup 190
1 Chicken & Sweetcorn soup 190
1 Singapore noodles 430
1 Chicken in black bean sauce 450
Total Spent 1,700 lira (£30.91)

The soups were good, my chicken dish not particularly authentic and the noodles very good. We were also very close to our next venue, who had messaged to check if I was on my way – very attentive.
We got seated in Books & Cookies where we had 2 tickets for the comedy show with Ege Öztokat for 800 lira (£14.55). We ordered drinks of 1 beer + 1 wine totalling 340 lira (£6.18) and got sat in our seats. There were a few familiar faces in the crowd too and it turned out to be a very funny and interesting evening. I really enjoyed being able to watch comedy in Dalyan as, along with good live music, it’s something I miss going to, on a regular basis.

Gratitude List
1. Working on a day off while checking plans for my own trips in 2026
2. Saving money by not going to Köyceğiz as I’d hoped
3. Comedy night at Books & Cookies.

Dalyan – 21st November

Dalyan – 21st November

Friday 21st November was the last day before Captain Caveman’s arrival in Dalyan. I was obviously looking forward to seeing him, however, the stress of trying to get everything done so that I could take some time off from Resort Experts and writing had crept up on me. I didn’t get to feeding the cat until almost 7.30am and she was questioning where her pâté was when I got there. I gave her some fuss before feeding her – she’s always very affectionate but calm. On the way back I checked in with the 2 white dogs, one of whom still had a bit of a sniffle but loved the warm blanket someone had put out for it. I still did a little walk but didn’t go as far today as time was cracking on.
I was meant to have a call with a friend, take my winter coat for a zip repair and call in to see Leanne at King Emlak but my morning didn’t go to plan and none of those happened.

I worked hard at my laptop until lunch then made a Slimming World friendly pizza from a wholemeal wrap. I had a quick video call with Captain Caveman who was excited to be getting out to Dalyan tomorrow. I’d been invited to Jamie and Drew’s for dinner and then we decided we would have a Friday night out. On my way to feed the cat again, I picked up a bottle of red Angora wine for 415 lira (£7.55) in Yaman Büfe 2. I also stopped to check on the 2 white dogs who were now firm friends.
At Jamie & Drew’s villa, Norman was pleased to see me and he was pacing about the kitchen hoping to get a morsel of dinner. We ate a lovely shepherd’s pie with a delicious red cabbage dish and we sipped wine and chatted.
After dinner, we walked to Ren Garden as they had their Friday night mulled wine on. Jamie and I are rather partial to a mulled wine and I ended up having 5 of them and we stayed until midnight. My bill came to 750 lira (£13.64) and I was rather merry. As we were passing and it was open, we ended up having a night cap in Jiks. We were the only 3 in there but it was cosy so we ordered a bottle of red wine between us. It was only Isabey but they charged 1,200 lira (£21.82) for it so I spent another 400 lira (£7.27) on booze and was convinced it would have been cheaper by the glass. One thing is clear on how to save money in Dalyan, though, is to not drink alcohol, but with so many bars and drinking pals it can be hard to do. Still, it was good to know I could have a great Friday night and get hammered for less than the equivalent of £30!
We all staggered home, a bit merry and I hoped I wouldn’t be hungover for Captain Caveman’s arrival tomorrow.

Gratitude List
1. Cute animals
2. Dinner with Jamie & Drew
3. Mulled wine night at Ren Garden.

Dalyan – 20th November

Dalyan – 20th November

I had another exciting day on Thursday 20th November, starting with feeding my friend’s cat just after sunrise and visits to my new favourite outdoor dogs. It had certainly got chillier in the evenings and early mornings now.
At 9am I walked over to Vanessa and Matt’s so that I could go with them to Ortaca. I’d arranged for the cleaner to come and do the whole apartment seeing as Captain Caveman was due to arrive in 2 days and I barely had time to get things done. I’d admitted defeat on the planner, as it was too late to get it delivered now for him to bring it out to me. Vanessa had an appointment in Ortaca so she had kindly agreed to give me a lift as I was off to the hairdresser’s in the afternoon and also preferred to be out of the house while the cleaner did her thing. We got to Ortaca and dropped Vanessa off then Matt and I went to Reyhan cafe. I had a hot chocolate and Matt had a coffee, the prices were reasonable, the service good and the cafe was big enough for me to be able to work from there later on. When Vanessa returned we all decided to have some lunch and I was impressed with their pizza, recommended by Matt. The food was fast food style but hot and on a plate, and they did really good offers.

After lunch, Matt and Vanessa left me in Reyhan for a bit longer and for an online meeting, which I took my noise cancelling headphones for. I also received my book cover latest version, from Nicole and was really pleased with how it looked. This made my day so I celebrated with tea and a cake before heading off to let Emrah, my hairdresser, work his magic. When I went to pay my bill at Reyhan, Matt had already paid for my lunch so I only had 190 lira (£3.45) to pay for tea and cake – very cheap, but not as good as Mono for the cake!

It was my first time of going to his new premises, since Emrah had moved to Ortaca from Dalyan, and it was very close to the bus station so fairly easy to find. I walked up the stairs as I wasn’t sure if the lift was working, although it was, and I received a warm welcome.
I had my hair done and it looked really good, the price had gone up a bit to 2,300 lira (£41.82) for a full colour, cut, blow-dry and Emrah’s signature curls. Some people in Dalyan had commented that they thought Emrah was expensive now but I loved how he did my hair and didn’t want to change. Even though I now had to come to Ortaca for it, I was happy enough to make time to do that every couple of months or so. I still rounded up my payment to give a tip and booked in for the Friday before Christmas as my next appointment.

I decided to get the bus back to Dalyan which cost just 46 lira (84p). When I got home, the cleaner has done a lovely job and saved me a whole day of having to do it myself. That evening I went to feed the cat, I spoke to Captain Caveman on video call and he’d decided we might be going to Madrid in July. There was another gig/festival he fancied and wanted to know if I would come if he could get the tickets! Of course, I said yes.

Gratitude List
1. A lovely outing to Ortaca with Matt & Vanessa
2. Getting my hair done by Emrah
3. A potential trip to Madrid in 2026.

Dalyan – 12th November

Dalyan – 12th November

Wednesday 12th November was chock-a-block with stuff!
Norman and I were out before daylight and he tried to go back to the spot he’d found the fish. He’d got an oyster shell in his mouth which I quickly retrieved – luckily as it was broken and could injure an animal.
After Norman’s breakfast he went back to bed while I took my measurements. I’d lost 0.4kg (0.9lb) on the home scales, which was surprising. My bust had stayed the same, I’d put 1cm on my waist but lost 1cm on my hips. Not bad, considering Sabotage Tuesday had got me.
I did some Resort Experts work before prioritising The Handy Travel Planner – yes, it now had a title! I updated the Packing, Itinerary, Must Do, See & Eats pages as well as reformatting the questions pages. I had soup for lunch before taking Norman on a quick outing before Fat Club. Bizarrely, on Carol’s scales, I was the same as last week. I was getting a bit frustrated that I wasn’t losing the weight but, although I was drinking far less and not as often, I wasn’t being as strict on the food. Even though I was walking Norman 3 times each day, it wasn’t far or fast.
After Fat Club I called at the shops to pick up some shopping to give to Kate. I was meeting her to pick up house keys so that I could start the cat care from tomorrow. Here’s what I bought, with prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket
Plastic bag 0.50
Pasta 13.95
Courgettes 18.98
Rice crackers 24.00
Milk 39.95
Chickpeas 69.95
Bananas 76.92
Pesto 79.95
Dark chocolate 84.95
Mushrooms 89.95
Total spent 499.10 lira (£9.07)

When I arrived at Ozzy’s to meet Kate, it was a little chaotic! Kate had just finished hosting the quiz and was trying to do 3 things at once. She apologised as she was very busy and had forgotten the key.
I sat down next to Vanessa and had a soda water but I had to leave because I was meeting my next cat owner to discuss her requirements and pick up her key. Vanessa and I took Ozzy’s phone number so that we could order delivery from him this coming weekend.

I said bye and headed to my next appointment, buying a couple of chocolate bars on the way as I was a bit early. I was eating a chocolate bar outside the Millennium shop when my friend arrived. We walked to her house, she gave me a spare key, and ran through the cat’s needs.
Norman and I had a little walk and bumped into my parents to say farewell and wish them a nice break at Jiva Beach in Fethiye. We then wandered past Phil who was walking Caramel and he’d left Penny in Tez bar. I decided to go in to say hello and had a glass of red wine while Norman got some fuss. He enjoyed listening to the regulars singing and even got a dog treat from Penny.
Back home I had a video call with Captain Caveman who was working in Scotland and was in a hotel. I had a very late dinner of chicken casserole then some cheese and wine as a weigh day treat.

Gratitude List
1. Not putting weight on
2. Norman
3. Things going well with half of the cat sitting arrangements.

Dalyan – 10th & 11th November

Dalyan – 10th & 11th November

Kate had invited me to join the pub crawl bunch on a trip to Göcek on Monday 10th November. As I had work to do, a planner to finish and little Norman to take care of, I had to decline. Göcek is a lovely town with a harbour, it can be a little more on the expensive side so, even if I had a day off, it isn’t really a place to visit if you’re on a tight budget.
I’d walked Norman and had a bit of an incident when he found some discarded fish and started eating it. I had to get my fingers in his mouth. He was crafty and hid it in his cheeks then, when I removed my hands, he snaffled it down. Norman proceeded to trot down the street as proud as punch that he’d got away with some fish that he’d found in the street!
When we got home Norman had to give himself a wash to get rid of the manky fish he’d had.
I did quite a lot of work for a Monday and didn’t have any time free to work on my planner, as I’d hoped. After another walk with Norman I made myself a Slimming World style pizza, forgetting I ate one yesterday.

Gratitude List
1. Saving money by not going on a jolly to Göcek
2. Norman, despite the fish eating incident
3. Slimming World style pizza.

I was up and out with Norman before 6.30am on Tuesday 11th November as I didn’t want him to disturb my neighbour again. Yesterday he had been barking at 7am when a cat got in the stairwell and was sick on the stairs. He managed to pick up a bit of oyster shel
Norman slept for most of the rest of the day but then we had an invite out in the evening. My parents had invited me over for a meal at their’s and this time Ma was cooking! I was really looking forward to it as Mom does a lovely Spag Bol and it was nice to be invited out, despite it being Fat Club tomorrow. Norman loves going over to my parents too and he was up the stairs in a flash. Rain had been forecast but it didn’t come while I was out and about.
It was nice to get together as Ma & Pa were off to Jiva Beach for Kate’s 5-day birthday break from Thursday. We had wine and lots of food which was really good. I took Norman’s treats with us so that my parents could give him some – he absolutely loved it.

Gratitude List
1. Early walks
2. Norman
3. Dinner at my parents.

Dalyan – 8th & 9th November

Dalyan – 8th & 9th November

There was a craft fair in Dalyan on Saturday 8th November and I’d arranged to accompany Nanny Kay to it. I got up early to walk Norman and had a slight hangover but it soon went after my tea and toast. I spoke to Captain Caveman before he got up and he was looking forward to seeing me in exactly 2 weeks’ time. He did want me to check the beach bus timetable as he was planning a couple of Sunday walks and wanted to see if the beach was a viable route.
I’d misunderstood the timings of today and Nanny Kay didn’t arrive until lunch time so I could’ve gone back to bed after the dog walk. We had a browse round the stalls and Nanny Kay got a couple of nice Christmas ornaments. It probably won’t surprise you that I just bought food items. Here’s what I got with the prices in lira;

Stall 1
Sourdough 200 lira (£3.64)

Stall 2
1 potato pasty
1 spinach pasty
100 lira (£1.82)

Stall 3
2 mince pies 120 lira (£2.18)

Jiks pub
2 Fantas 200 lira (£3.64)

I had a lovely few hours out, in the sun for just 620 lira (£11.26). We’d had to have a sit down and a beverage at Jiks as it was just so hot.
Norman was asleep when I got home but when he woke up he was pleased to see me and we went out for a walk. It was 3.15pm when I had sourdough, olives and cheese for lunch. Norman reminded me that we still hadn’t been to buy any treats and that we should go today. I reassured him he could have some tomorrow and that he’d be ok as he’s put quite a lot of weight on recently.
I did a few more updates for my forthcoming planner and then had more sourdough as it was just so nice. Tomorrow, I was meant to be taking the day off but I really needed to be getting my book finished and delivered to Captain Caveman so that he could bring a proof copy out for me to check. I wanted to get it published and on sale before Christmas.
On the evening dog walk, we called in to see my parents and I gave them some pasties from the fair but didn’t go in as Dad was getting in the shower and they were off out later.

Gratitude List
1. Sourdough
2. Norman
3. Spending time with Nanny Kay.

I wasn’t planning on seeing anyone on Sunday 9th November as I’d decided to get on with the internal pages of my planner. My parents and their friends had gone on a Yellow boat day trip so I hadn’t arranged to meet them.
I took Norman on a dog walk in the morning, in the middle of the day and again in the evening. He only went a couple of blocks but at least it was not raining. He slept a lot and I got on with stuff, slower than I wanted to be doing!
When I finished for the evening, I fed Norman and he hinted that he wanted some treats so I decided to go to the shop.
As I went in Migros, Julie came running up behind me to say my parents were in Ozzy’s and I should come and say hello after their boat trip.
I quickly grabbed some dog treats and some human ones too for a total of 174.10 lira (£3.18) and then wandered over to join my parents, Julie & Gareth, Adam & Kath. I ended up having a couple of red wines and a chicken pizza in Ozzy’s and my parents shared a pizza too.
My dinner with drinks came to just 705 lira (£12.82) and was an unplanned and tasty surprise. Ozzy was giving residents a 10% discount during the winter which was a lovely gesture and his pizzas are excellent.

Gratitude List
1. Getting a little further with my planner
2. Norman
3. An impromptu meal and drinks with my parents & friends.

Dalyan – 7th November

Dalyan – 7th November

I was awake at 5am on Friday 7th November and, by 6am, I was walking Norman before the forecast rain came. He wouldn’t go down the steps again but on the way back he tried to get up them and struggled so I had to push him on his bum to help. He was still faster than me at getting up the stairs and I had to put the torch on my phone as it was still dark and the automatic light didn’t stay on long enough to make it. After his breakfast, Norman had a nap on the sofa but he woke up at 10am and I decided to take him for another walk. This time we got quite wet in the rain and saw a dead snake. Norman was surprised to see Lukka bar was closed for the winter as he had a look to see if he could see any of his friends.
I got back and dried off quickly before a call with a friend in the UK, which was lovely. I decided to get weighed after having a shower and found that I was just under 70kg, for the first time in a while.
As I sat at my desk (kitchen table) on my new office chair, I saw the updates on a Dalyan Pub Crawl group that I’m on. Matt & Vanessa had organised a pub crawl from 3pm and I had said if they were still out after work tonight I might join them. They were starting in Ozzy’s with the intention of checking out several bars, perhaps in persuit of the cheapest beers and best pool tables.
My last appointment was another Zoom training session about expeditions to the Galapagos islands which looked so good. Once I’d finished that, I had a chat with Norman, who had presumed I was off out without him and was on a bit of a downer. He’d now started referring to my parents as Granny Annie and Grandpa Stupid, as he thought it was funny and we did a video to send to Little Daddy and Stepdaddy Drew.
I had to once again carry Norman down all of the stairs and he was so slow walking, as if he didn’t want to go out. The Pub Crawlers had only got as far as Ozzy’s then Jiks in 4 hours so I stopped there to have a drink with them. Plus, Norman was reluctant to go any further so it was a good pitstop on our evening walk. We were just going to have one drink and then go back – I’m sure you can guess how that turned out!?

I perched on the end seat next to Kate and opposite Vanessa – little Norman had a sniff about for any dropped food! My Dad ordered me a red wine and it was evident I needed to catch up massively. Everyone was ready to move to the next pub (well, it was a pub crawl) during my first drink. I knew Norman had struggled to make it this far so I said my goodbyes and was about to call it a night when Kate told the others that she was going to stay with me at Jiks for one more drink and then she would see everyone at Corner bar.
I ordered another red wine and told Norman to get comfy as Kate and I discussed her 7 cats, including the 2 new blind kittens.
When I went to pay for my 2 wines, it turned out my parents had paid for my first one and I’d not even had chance to speak to them for long. I paid my 150 lira (£2.73) and we left. Kate was going to join the others in Corner Bar, which had become the new place for some of the Dalyan Dwellers to frequent. As we got to the end of the road, where I would turn right to return home with Norman and Kate could go straight on, Norman got a second wind and continued on with Kate – we were off to Corner bar!
When we arrived there, everyone was eating takeaway chicken wraps with chips from nearby Bliss so I had a few of Vanessa’s chips and they were good. Kate and I jumped on the band wagon and ordered a chicken wrap with chips to share. The food was really good and only cost me 180 lira (£3.27) for my share.
Vanessa and Matt left quite soon after I arrived, about 10pm. Kate left not long after that. I’d just got my second glass of wine and had started talking to Dad when everyone but Mark decided to leave. I had 2 red wines at a total of 280 lira (£5.09) but that was my limit for a Friday night as it meant I’d had 4 in total and I was on a budget still. Norman was sleeping on the couch and Mark went over to chat to a fella and his son, so I had a photo with the waiter and then left. Norman and I were home by 11pm – Norman had thoroughly enjoyed his pub crawl, even though he only managed 2 of the 3 bars!

Gratitude List
1. Training on expedition cruises
2. Norman – he loved joining the pub crawl
3. A rare night out with friends and parents for 610 lira (£11.09)
