Dalyan & Göcek – 20th February

Dalyan & Göcek – 20th February

On Thursday 20th February I had an impromptu trip out, as Carol from Fat Club had found herself at a loose end. I said I would go with her to Göcek while her fella had band practice at home. I had a few hours spare so it was good timing. I went to the bank and drew out some money in case I saw anything that I needed (not wanted, I was still at the prioritising purchases stage). Carol picked me up about 11am and we drove to Göcek while chatting on. The toll for the tunnel was now a whopping 60 lira (£1.33) which I had seen a few moans on social media about.  We had a wander round and I ended up getting quite a few items, see below with prices in lira;

Bella Maison
1 Cheese Grater 182.99 lira (£4.06)

Macrocenter Supermarket
2 Quark 35.00
Garlic Powder 49.95
1 pack Sun Dried tomatoes 49.95
1 lettuce 59.95
1kg baby potatoes 72.05
Total spent 301.90 lira (£6.71)

Levissi Wine House
6 bottles of Gamay Red wine 900 lira (£20)

Watson’s
1 Facemask 29.95
2 packs of wet wipes 38.95
Lense wipes 49.95
Hand cream 69.95
Total spent 188.80 lira (£4.20)

The council café
1 Large tea 15.00
1 Black coffee 50.00
Total spent 65.00 lira (£1.44)

I’d been looking for a proper cheese grater for ages and this one was reduced from 600 lira (£13.33) which I would never had paid. The whole Bella Maison shop had a 70% discount off but I resisted the urge to buy anything that I didn’t need. I was particularly impressed with the Macrocenter which had an amazing selection of booze. I was tempted by the Kahlua for 750 lira (£16.67) as I’m partial to a White Russian and had vodka at home. I resisted, of course, and turned away from looking at the Prosecco.
Although I didn’t ‘need’ wine, I decided that I would always want to buy wine and the 6 bottles was the equivalent of paying for 1 bottle out in a bar so it made practical sense, while it was still on offer. It was also currently my favourite wine in Turkey and I was using money I had been given as a gift. The lady recognised me from previous visits and even gave me and Carol a free bottle and told us we had to share it. That was sweet and Carol kept it in her car so that she didn’t drink it and we could have it together another time. I went a bit mad in Watson’s, which is like a cheap Superdrug, and then I treated Carol to a coffee at the council run cafe. It had been a great trip out and all for less than £40 spent – hopefully I was still within the monthly budget and would make sure I was careful for the next week.
I got straight back on with work while eating a cheese sandwich and carried on until late. I warmed up a spaghetti with meatballs for dinner and drank sage tea. Before 11pm, I had a call with Captain Caveman who had been busy with work.

Gratitude List
1. An impromptu trip to Göcek with Carol
2. Being able to afford some small luxuries
3. Having beef for dinner which was really tasty.

Dalyan & Göcek – 21st January

Dalyan & Göcek – 21st January

Debbie and Mike had invited me to join them for a trip out on Tuesday 21st January. The plan was to drive over to Göcek to the wine shop so that we could all take advantage of the reasonably priced wine before it went up in price. I had just 1 slice of wholemeal toast with cheese spread and a cup of tea for breakfast before walking Lady C. The drive to Göcek was smooth and we were in the Levissi Wine House by 11.30am. I was impressed that I had remembered where it was as Debbie had parked on a main road where I hadn’t got my bearings. The lady at the shop recognised me and we chatted about coming all the way from Dalyan for the lovely wine. She said that we could still buy the stock she had left at the same price but it would be going up and stocks were running low. The stocks of Merlot had depleted quite fast but there were still stocks of the Makri brand as well as the Levissi Cabernet Sauvignon, the Gamay (a favourite of ours) and the Petit Verdot. There was still lots of rosé and white but the 3 of us only wanted to get red this time. I decided on 12 bottles of the Gamay which, at still only 150 lira (£3.41), was a great spend of 1,800 lira (£41) for a case of 12. I’m sure that a couple of nights out on the town drinking wine in the Dalyan bars would come to that so I was pleased. I was well versed with borrowing the trolley from nearby Carrefour supermarket, as instructed previously on our first visit with Ian and Janet. I was still very grateful for their recommendation of Levissi Wine House as it meant that we had saved a lot of money on our wine purchases in the last few months. Steering the trolley was funny and, while Debbie went to bring the car nearer, Mike and I tried our best to not injure anyone, or ourselves, with a wayward trolley.
As we were so quick stocking up on the wine, we decided to have a little wander in Göcek and we even did the tourist thing of standing on a bridge and getting photos for the Instagram. A couple of young ladies were there doing it and so we just had to join in! Göcek has a lovely port and the sun was shining so after a stroll we returned to a fancy café/restaurant on the harbour front for a beverage. West Café & Bistro was a popular place and the staff were very efficient when us ‘oldies’ didn’t want to use the QR code menus and brought actual ones for us. We weren’t eating but I did take a photo of the menu and noticed a soup was 210 lira (£4.77), pizzas started at 330 lira (£7.50) and a chicken kebab main was 570 lira (£12.95). The place was spotlessly clean and had good toilets so I thought the prices reflected the quality of the place. Debbie and Mike shared a cafetière of coffee and I really enjoyed my large Turkish tea. The tea was 75 lira (£1.70) which is very expensive for Turkish prices, however, it did come very well presented and with a biscuit. We all commented how lovely it was to sit there and enjoy our drinks in the sunshine on such a glorious day. I also thought it would be a great place to come with friends and family when they are over to visit. What we didn’t notice until we were leaving was that they had a cake counter so next time that might be one to try for a treat.

We decided, as we were on a budget, that we would stick to our plan and eat lunch at Dalaman prison café on the way back. As it was my weigh day tomorrow I was planning on eating healthily but ended up throwing caution to the wind by ordering the köfte which came with bread, chips and onion rings. It was absolutely delicious and our total bill for the 3 of us, with drinks too, came to just 730 lira (£16.60). Less than £6 each for a substantial lunch was more my kind of eatery and the service at the prison is also excellent.
As we left the café, it started to rain so it looked like we had timed our jaunt well, and I’m so glad I had decided to go. When we got back to Dalyan, I got the wine in to the cupboards so that I wouldn’t be tempted to drink any tonight, my 4th consecutive alcohol free evening. Lady C and I went out for a walk early as the heavy rain was coming and Chico had been waiting patiently to join us. We also bumped in to a friend who lives round the corner and said hello to her 2 dogs and then another stray joined us on the rest of the walk. There was sploshing aplenty for Lady C and she was soaked when we got back home. She slept while I cracked on with some work and then we had a bit of fun doing the biscuit trick again. We watched repeats of ‘Celebrity Coach Trip’ on TV, the one with Paul Danan on, from ages ago. By bed time I was very tired and really looking forward to a good sleep.

Gratitude List
1. Having some time off to go to Göcek
2. Enjoying a prison lunch
3. Lady C being really well behaved and meeting other dogs.

Dalyan & Göcek – 17th December

Dalyan & Göcek – 17th December

There was a planned power cut due at our apartment on Tuesday 17th December but it was not going to affect our day, as we had an exciting trip out planned. I got my cup of tea in bed and then got up to have a double breakfast of buttered toast and a grapefruit. I’d already gone way over the top on syns this week so I knew I was going to have put weight on at Fat Club tomorrow. Captain Caveman had a really bad sore throat and shouldn’t have been coming on the day out but he insisted he would be fine as long as he didn’t speak. I walked the dogs and got them settled for the rest of the day as we went to meet our friends, Ian & Janet. Captain Caveman had become good friends with Ian through the Sunday Walking group and he had told us about a place in Göcek, where they used to live, that has a great wine shop with good deals on. The sun was shining and we had arranged to go along for some wine shopping, which is what I had decided I would spend my parents’ Christmas money on as a really nice treat. We arrived in Göcek just before lunch time and went straight to the Levissi Wine shop where we met Ian and Janet’s friend. The lady who ran the shop knew our fellow wine shoppers very well and was very friendly. The Levissi wine that was on offer was only 150 lira (£3.37) per bottle so was great value and also, according to Janet, really good. Ian doesn’t drink alcohol so we only had Janet’s word for it but their friend could also recommend it. Our friends had quite a few bottles but we decided we would just get 12 bottles, 2 of each of 5 reds and a 2 of the rose. They also had whites but we both prefer red in winter so I didn’t want to get something we wouldn’t drink. Here’s what we got at the wine shop;

Levissi Şarap Evi
2 bottles of Petit Verdot red wine 300
2 bottles of Gamay red wine 300
2 bottles of Merlot red wine 300
2 bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon red wine 300
2 bottles of Makri red wine 300
2 bottles of Makri blush wine 300
Total spent 1,800 lira (£40.45)

I was thrilled that we had got so much wine for such a bargain, the cheapest one I’ve enjoyed in Dalyan was 43% more. After borrowing a couple of shopping trollies from the nearby Carrefour supermarket to take all the wine to the car, we decided to have a meander round Göcek town centre. Janet and I got involved with a stray dog situation as I just couldn’t help it. A lively pup came up to us and barked until we followed him to his fat, old (dog) friend who was laying on the floor outside the back of a building. The pup was trying to tell us that the older overweight dog couldn’t get up and I thought it was sick. I did a bit of a foolish thing really, as I went to check it out and got a bit too near to the dog and it snapped at me a little. It turned out that the older dog just didn’t want to play and the pup was just trying to get his friend to get up and join in. We re-joined the men who hadn’t noticed we had been gone and then we had a really nice stroll around the town, stopping off at the pharmacy for more throat sweets for Captain Caveman, who had now started talking fine. We bought ginger throat pastilles for 49.95 lira (£1.12) at Watson’s and I noticed they had quite a good range of electric toothbrush heads at a good price.

After the wine shopping, we decided to have lunch in Göcek at a cute waterfront café, called Moc Café. It was a first for both Captain Caveman and I however our fellow wine shoppers had been a few times and liked it there. The sun was shining so we sat outside and ordered drinks then lunch. The men chose pizza or burgers, which were massive, and Janet and I ordered a chicken wrap. We all stuck to non-alcoholic drinks to be sensible and when the food came it was really nice. Janet & I got chicken shish instead of a wrap but it turned out to be a good mistake and probably better for my Slimming World plan, even though it was a little bit too late now. Captain Caveman and I paid 1,155.00 lira (£25.96) for a Turkish tea, an Americano coffee, 1 Cheeseburger and 1 Chicken shish. I really enjoyed having a rare lunch out and I thought the prices, to say we were sat on the harbour front in a stylish café, were pretty reasonable.
We drove back after lunch and on the way back, Janet and Ian invited us in to their home to try last year’s stock of the Levissi wine. Janet had a bottle of the Merlot already opened and she ended up opening another, it was very quaffable and we were pleased with our purchases if it was as good as this batch.

Ian, who doesn’t drink, drove us home and Captain Caveman went home to unpack the wine with strict instructions to take a photo of it so I could send it to my Mom to say thank you for our Christmas present. I rushed back to make sure Norman and Edna were ok as this was the first time in the 3 weeks we had left the dogs for longer than a couple of hours. When I went in to Jamie’s living room, Norman and Edna had just been snoozing away but were pleased to see me. I let them out while a grabbed the leads and poo bags for a walk. Norman was enjoying the new tiled patio area so much that he had taken to doing a poo on the same tile whenever he got the chance and he didn’t disappoint today. Captain Caveman arrived back and he was feeling a bit better so he made spaghetti with chicken, red pepper, onion and sucuk for our dinner. We didn’t have any more wine, though, as we had already had enough.

Dalyan – 7th & 8th November

Dalyan – 7th & 8th November

I cracked on with work on Tuesday 7th November and had already done over an hour’s work by the time Captain Caveman left for Bridge. For lunch I had more left over veggie curry with egg fried rice. I decided, as I’d lost quite a bit of weight (just over a stone), I’d have a sort out of my clothes that were too big and either sell them or put them in the charity bag. As I my earnings had reduced, but with Captain Caveman here and friends visiting, I could do with some extra beer money to supplement my income.
When Captain Caveman got home he went to fetch a water refill then made a sandwich. Just as we were deciding what to cook for dinner, Caroline messaged to say she was on her way back from Göcek and would meet us at Tez bar for sundowners and would like to go out for a meal tonight. We were up for that, as it was her treat and to say goodbye. I did say she would miss sunset but we agreed to meet at Tez bar. My parents love a Tez-pat sundowner so they were up for it and we then made our way over to Okyanus for dinner.
We shared some amazing starters of samphire, halloumi, stuffed mushrooms, carrot dip, beetroot, bread and Dad had soup. For mains, Captain Caveman and Caroline both had stuffed veggie dishes, Dad ordered casserole, Mom a peppered steak and I had a chicken shish. We had a great meal and, as the portions were generous, we took quite a bit of it home. By the end of the night Caroline had found a stray cat to pet and we were all ready for bed. I was particularly tired and I wanted to be up early for work tomorrow, so that I’d be finished in time for Fat Club.

It was weigh day on Wednesday 8th November and I was not feeling optimistic at all. I love going to the Fat Club group as the members are very supportive, however, when you know you’ve not really made as much of an effort as you intended it can feel a bit like playing at it. I got on the scales at home and took my measurements to find I’d put on 0.5kg (1.1lb), I’d put 1cm on my bust and hips but my waist remained the same.
I worked until 12.30pm then had finished for the week, Caroline was not at home and Captain Caveman had gone on his Sunday’s postponed walk. I don’t mind saying it was bliss to have no interruptions as I made myself beans on toast for brunch with a nice cup of Yorkshire tea. I went through our book stash to see which I could swap or lend Dad then I went through more clothes to donate or sell. I sorted out a few Slimming World recipes for future use, wondering what we might have for dinner tonight.
Unfortunately, Fat Club was cancelled due to Carol being sick so Captain Caveman suggested a bit of a walk for some fresh air. That evening he decided he would make dinner and did airfryer quesadillas. He did set fire to an airfryer liner when he put it in the airfryer loose and to heat up. It was a good job I have a sensitive nose to smell the burning but, of course, he didn’t listen when I interfered. We were going to watch Netflix and chill but it was more like choose something to snore to. The weather was still good and looked to be for another couple of days at least – perfect weather for Caroline’s motorbiking trip, which had been postponed for a couple more days.

Dalyan & Göcek – 18th July

Dalyan & Göcek – 18th July

It was Captain Caveman’s birthday on Tuesday 18th July and he was off on a bit of a holiday within Vietnam. He’d been disappointed not to be working as he’s usually down the cave on his birthday. Luckily, seeing the monkeys and pangolins at Cuc Phuong National Park animal rescue centre managed to make his birthday a little bit different. I was sad to not be there with him but I wouldn’t enjoy the humidity and we had much more exciting things planned, including a trip that Captain Caveman had helped shape a few years ago.

I worked from 10.30am until 3.45pm because we were getting picked up by Murat Deniz at 4.30pm. Gayle and I had booked for the 5 of us to go on the Galloping Seahorses trip as a private trip with Kaptan Deniz Travel and we were both terrified. Morgan loves horses so she was so up for it, April and Neil were also playing it cool and not acting scared. All the way to Göcek, my sister and I worried and discussed the feasibilities of shitting oneself on a horse. When we arrived it was a lovely place where the horses looked well cared for but Gayle and I thought the horses looked bigger than we might have anticipated. Murat did his best to put us at ease but in the end it was just a case of getting (back) on the horse. Neil was on the biggest one first, then Morgan on a horse that liked a canter (but not donkeys we found out later on), I got the new mother who was meant to be a steady bet, April’s horse was nice and well mannered while I suspected Gayle’s horse was meant to be the one that didn’t mind taking it easy. Getting on the horses was hilarious then frustrating as my leg no longer swings over and we had to push up from someone’s knee. The horse felt so high up and I realised I had not been listening to the ‘reins holding’ instructions beyond the first sentence. I asked to get back off but Murat chucked a deaf ‘un, while my sister struggled but got on. Neil was a natural, Morgan looked like a pro and April had obviously done it before but was probably embarrassed by me and her mom being such nervous Nerys’s. Gayle and I were shaking and I saw that she looked more terrified than me, there was every chance that one of us could shit our actual pants! Before we could do anything, we were off and I did all I could to keep my feet forward and hold on to the saddle I had ended up clutching, like I was on a white knuckle ride at a theme park. A few metres in, the young foals of 2 of our horses trotted by and I was more nervous.

Murat’s video of the start of our horse riding trip

By the time we got to the ‘putting our heads down to avoid tree branches’ bit, my feet were completely numb. After almost an hour, we got to a clearing that lead to the beach and I had never been so pleased to see the sea!
I had a mini meltdown when I had to wait to be helped to get off my horse, Apache, but once on the beach I was a lot calmer. Gayle looked very stressed but we were both pleased to have made it this far. We were just celebrating the fact we hadn’t soiled our swimmers, and saying we’d probably walk it back to the ranch, when Murat explained we would be taking one of the most experienced horses in to the sea and riding bareback! Crikey, I didn’t think I could cope with this level of adventure!

Morgan went first with her horse in to the sea. She made it look effortless and it was amazing to watch. I decided I wouldn’t be trying that, I could barely stay on a horse with a saddle, never mind without. Although I had a bikini on beneath my jeggings and T-shirt, I decided taking them off for a dip in the sea without my towel (left back at the ranch) would be foolish as I’d never get them back on. Instead, I just took off my T-shirt, trainers and socks then got in the sea with April for a calming down dip. I also needed a nervous wee and asked April to keep a look out as I know Murat loves taking photos and I didn’t want to get caught on camera with my pants down in the sea. That’s when we spotted that we had an actual photographer with us! We swam up to the horse with Morgan on and they both seemed so happy in the sea. Neil was next and we were expecting some comedy struggles we could laugh at, but alas he managed it well. Gayle, April and I said no to the getting on the horse, walking it in to the sea and along.

Murat reassured us that we would be fine and I do love water (more than horses) so I agreed. It took me ages to get on the horse but once on, the horse was more than happy to take itself back in to the water. I don’t have a ‘bucket list’ and if I did this would never have been on it, however, it definitely should be. It was just such an amazing feeling that I will never forget and, at last, my fear was fading. Both April and Gayle also had a go and we were all pleased we did as it really was such a magical thing to do, on an almost empty beach before sunset.

Murat’s video of Morgan horseriding in the sea

We went back to our respective horses, had help getting back on and, this time, I held the reins properly, instead of the saddle, after rechecking with the instructor. The ride back was much more pleasant and I even managed to stop my horse, as well as get it to go around a donkey and a passing car. I couldn’t stop her from enjoying an impromptu snack from a passing tree branch though so I wasn’t quite cut out for a life as an equestrian.
Back at the ranch, we were all feeling good, some of us more from relief than anything. I had agreed to go on this trip as I knew how much Morgan and April would love it, but I actually ended the horse ride adventure feeling amazed by it. Of course I had only been walking, returning possibly on a slight trot, on my horse so I wasn’t quite a fully fledged Galloping Seahorse member (yet)!
The ranch guy and Murat made sure we had a limonata, a biscuit, some water and that we had all enjoyed our time before transferring Morgan all of the photos (there were hundreds). I didn’t have the phone memory so Gayle would send me them another day. I think we’d all built up a bit of a thirst and were ready for our dinner at one of Murat’s favourite spots.

As Captain Caveman’s birthday was ending in Vietnam, Murat and his driver took us for dinner at a lovely restaurant. Dalya Life Göcek Hotel, where I’d last been for a breakfast with my parents and John B on a trip not long after Covid ended, was a great place. I think my sister, Gayle, was just so happy to have survived the Galloping Seahorses trip that she wanted to celebrate. The girls ordered soft drinks but Gayle, Neil, Murat and I ordered the national drink of Turkey, Rakı. I’m not a fan of aniseed flavoured anything, but when in Rome! We had a couple and ordered food then a bottle or 2 of wine. The first one, wasn’t to our liking so we ordered a different one and we paid for the remainder of the trip and the photographer. We all agreed it had been a lovely thing to all do together and I definitely would not have done it otherwise (even Captain Caveman was expecting me not to survive it unscathed). Gayle ordered fish, Morgan had pasta, April steak with samphire, Neil something meaty that I forgot to make a note of and I went for the meatballs. I tasted some of April’s samphire and that was lovely and we all had a good meal. The journey back home was hilarious, with my sister singing along to Smokey’s ‘Who the F is Alice’ and then us all having a right old laugh at her. Murat dropped us all off at Mutlu Villas and I went in for a night cap. Gayle was that trollied that we pretended to give her gin for her second drink which was really water and she didn’t notice straight away.
It had been an incredible day, one that I don’t think any of us would forget – probably not even our tour guide, Murat!
I walked home just after midnight, slightly pleased that I had some work to do tomorrow while the family did yet another trip.
