Dalyan – 10th March

Dalyan – 10th March

On Monday 10th March I awoke to a message from The Aussies that my book had arrived in Australia and Greg had sent me a selfie – the first one I received. He was excited to be the first person in Australia to read it, Amanda would be reading it after him. It felt so good to have friends’ support, particularly ones who travel a lot and who we met in the place most of the chapters describe. I was a bit nervous but excited to know what they thought of my ramblings. I had now sold around 20 books and I was looking forward to hearing the reviews.
To distract myself, I started my residency renewal preparation and had decided to save money and do it myself instead of using an agent, which can cost up to £250 on top of all the other things needed. After breakfast oats and banana cake and a cup of tea, I went off to the bank to get 6 months’ of bank statements printed out to show I had put in the required amounts to my Turkish bank account. The rules only asked for 33,156 lira (£705 approx at today’s rate) for the last 3 months but I had been putting in a little more, just in case.
On the way back from the bank I called at the shop and bought the following, prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket
1 plastic bag 0.50
Chocolate biscuits 19.00
Light yoghurt 28.12
Sweetcorn 32.50
Cheese spread 34.90
2 tins tomatoes 35.90
Mixed beans 39.95
1kg chicken breasts 156.10
2 packs of mozzarella cheese 199.80
Total spent 546.77 lira (£11.61)

Nanny Kay popped round for a cup of tea and Edna was beside herself to have a visitor – her first in the 2 weeks that I had been looking after the dogs. She wouldn’t leave Nanny Kay alone and even kept fetching her a toy to play with and throw for her. It might have been because I had treated us to biscuits, which Edna was not used to.
In the afternoon, in between work enquiries, I went through all of my bank statements to check that each month had more than the required amount in. March had in the exact amount right now but more was due to go in this week. I was so pleased I had managed it and was so hoping that I would get granted my 2 years renewal this time. They had changed the rules the day after I got my 6 month renewal last time and I had been so gutted to have missed out. I spoke to Captain Caveman who was in Sheffield and was suggesting I might want to consider asking an agent to do the residency to make sure that it would definitely get done on a 2 year basis. I explained the costs of the insurance was already going to be a lot and I should save money. I got in touch with Aytaç Saraymine at Saraymine Insurance Agency, as well as the one I already had 6 months left of my policy with, to get quotes for a 2 year policy as required for the residency application.
For dinner I had roasted vegetable and feta style cheese with pasta and it was really lovely. I then joined a Lisa Johnson live Q&A session to hear her answer any questions about her and her business.

Gratitude List
1. Seeing Nanny Kay
2. Knowing that I had managed to get the required amount of money in to my Turkish bank account for the last 6 months – it had not been easy after losing my job.
3. Lisa Johnson’s Q&A session.

Dalyan – 6th March

Dalyan – 6th March

I had something a bit different for breakfast on Thursday 6th March; soft cheese with fresh bread and a cup of Yorkshire tea. I cracked on with both work and attempting to get my book promoted over Facebook and by messaging people directly who had once shown an interest in it. The main countries I was having trouble getting it available in paperback was Turkey and Vietnam, which was a real shame given that’s where I had spent a lot of time. There was a planned power cut from 8.30am today which actually didn’t start until later. Edna took over from Norman as chair-dog as Norman was tired but Edna was nosey.
At lunch time I went to the shop to get a few treats. It was definitely obvious from what I bought that I was able to splash out a little more than usual, which was really nice, but I was still mindful of buying things that were on offer. Here’s what I bought and the prices in lira;

BIM Supermarket

Chewing gum 17.50
1 Chicken pot noodle 30.00
2 packets of crisps 31.00
1 pack of Naan bread 55.00
1kg Basmati rice 62.50
6 Dido Chocolate bars 87.00
250g Chocolate chips 89.00
1 Dubai Chocolate bar 120.00
2 packs of frozen Blueberries 220.00
Total spent 712.00 lira (£15.15)

This was quite an expensive shop for me but I was allowing myself to do that, the lira had also now reached 47 to the pound. By the time I got back to Jamie’s the power was back on but not the internet so I had a couple of sage teas, a Dido chocolate bar and a pot noodle for lunch.
The internet was back on in time for the Resort Experts team meeting at 2pm. Our focus areas today were a new CRM system, Last Minute Bookings and important events in the calendar.
After the team meeting and a dog walk, I tried Dubai chocolate – a first for me! It is really good and very unusual. For dinner I ate leftover chicken and mushroom stroganoff with garlic cabbage instead of rice and it was surprisingly tasty.

Gratitude List
1.Being able to buy treats in the shopping this week
2. A really good team meeting
3. Dubai Chocolate for the first time!

Dalyan – 2nd & 3rd March

Dalyan – 2nd & 3rd March

At 3am on Sunday 2nd March I was wishing that the bathroom lay out had the sink and toilet closer to each other! The chicken kebab I had eaten last night was not quite as enjoyable on its way out. I was so ill and felt terrible. I spent a few hours in the bathroom before trying to go back to sleep but didn’t really manage it. I had to call in sick to the Sunday meet up and had at first thought it was because I wasn’t used to drinking so much wine these days. When I went to pick up the bag with the kebab wrapper in, to take to it out to the bin, it made me puke again. I was in a bad way most of the day but there was no rest as I had 2 holiday enquiries for last minute deals that needed focusing on. Luckily, I found some ginger and honey tea in the cupboard and the dogs gave me lots of love. Edna knew I was sick and kept herself near to me. I managed a short walk with them in the afternoon but didn’t eat anything until late afternoon and then I managed toast and a cup of tea.
I eventually ate a proper meal at almost dinner time, of curry with a wrap. After finishing off some work and lining up a couple more bookings for March, I had a lazy evening and watched TV. I was in bed relatively early and ready for a busy Monday.

Gratitude List
1. The kebab syns might not have stayed in long enough to count
2. Ginger tea
3. Norman and Edna being so easy to look after when I was feeling delicate.

I started the day with tea and toast while feeling a lot more human again on Monday 3rd March. Edna was overly fussy as she wanted to check I was well again, while Norman was wondering why we were all up so early.
Rain was forecast so I took my laundry home, called at the bank and went to the shops to buy provisions while waiting for UK work related people to wake up. Here’s what I bought with the prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket
1 tin of tomatoes 21.95
1 wholemeal loaf 49.95
Walnuts 65.90
576g of chicken breasts 120.96
Total spent 258.76 lira (£5.64)

I had 2 bookings to complete plus more enquiries today so things were definitely looking good for holiday bookings as more people got ready to book their breaks.
I had leek and potato soup for lunch and had made a chicken and mushroom stroganoff in the slow cooker for dinner. I enrolled on a Planner Ideation course with Claire Clarke who I had briefly worked with before and had last spoke to her before I published my book. I was very busy after the dog walk and, when I dialled in to a Lisa Johnson Make Money Online Masterclass, the electric went off and I couldn’t continue the webinar.

Gratitude List
1. Enrolling on a course with Claire Clarke
2. Being in a position to apply for residency now
3. Treats of walnuts in my shopping.

Dalyan – 1st March

Dalyan – 1st March

Sam and Paul, at Resort Experts made the Travel Weekly news and we were all congratulating them on Saturday 1st March. They, along with the developer, had created the Quoteaway quoting tool which we had been the testers and early adopters of. I loved it as it made our jobs easier and quicker when looking at package holidays. I also saw a post from a friend in America about how to support friends with small businesses which I thought was great. It was something I tried to do wherever possible to help promote others and now that it also applied to me, I was even keener to do so, as I knew how much it meant. I had reached 250 followers on my Resort Experts business page which, if I’m honest, I had hoped it would be more. I decided that this month I should maybe get back on to using Instagram as I knew it had become popular again in recent years. I did know that this month was going to be Money Minded March and I was going to up my game and get focused. Having worked out how I had done against my £400 budget, I was very pleased with myself for coming in at £350, including all bills and paying off my credit card in full. I decided I would increase the budget this month to £500 but that was only because I knew I was going to need to spend more this month, it had 3 more days in and Captain Caveman was due back to Dalyan at the end of March. I also had my residency renewal application to pay for.
I had tea and toast for breakfast on what started out as a cold, misty and damp morning – the dogs were not impressed. After transferring Captain Caveman’s money from my Wise to my Turkish account, knowing I could now get the print outs on Monday to apply for my residency renewal, I could stress less. I still wanted to keep motivated to earn enough to save money to cover expenses, plus have a few more trips once the holiday season started and I had finished with my residency renewal process. I worked all morning and then had leftover chicken with some pineapple and quark – a little unconventional but I was aware I had to reduce the amount of bread I was eating. Norman and Edna were a bit bored but by the afternoon the sun came out and we had a walk. I was too busy with enquiries to go to the weekly market this week. I didn’t really need to go but I do enjoy a wander round it.

After the dog walk in the sun, on Saturday 1st March, I arranged to catch up with friends at Mono & More cafe. Neither of us took the dogs as we thought it might be busy as it had turned in to a sunny afternoon. I’d been looking forward to a wine since Wednesday and I also tried a bit of my friend’s carrot cake – it was really lovely. I ordered a red wine and ended up having a couple for just 250 lira (£5.45) which was an absolute bargain.
As the sun went in we decided to move to Ozzy’s bar – the wine there was 160 lira (£3.49) for a glass which, although more expensive, still wasn’t unreasonable and it was a good measure. Unfortunately, we had to move seats because of expats smoking in there and I almost needed to use my inhaler as I couldn’t breathe. I went a bit mad and ended up spending 640 lira (£13.94) but it had a been the first time in ages I’d been out out. We said our farewells as I had to get back for the dogs and I remembered I hadn’t got anything prepared for dinner. I decided I would treat myself to a chicken kebab at Hatay Kebabs on the way home. Captain Caveman and I have always loved the food there and I had already blown the healthy eating plan today.
I got it to take away and the dogs were reluctant to go outside as they could smell the kebab and wanted some. I had ordered it without sauce or chillies and, when I ate it, it tasted really good. I went to bed looking forward to a leisurely Sunday and a causal meet up for a stroll with friends.

Gratitude List
1. Having the afternoon off work
2. Having enough cash to be able to afford some treats, having come in under budget for February
3. Going out for drinks with friends.

Dalyan – 28th February

Dalyan – 28th February

During the night it had been stormy so I was up early on Friday 28th February. The dogs got wet on their wander out and Norman seemed to have a sore ear that he wouldn’t let me touch. Captain Caveman called me as soon as he woke up to tell me he had been paid (his first pay day) and he was going to transfer me the money for my February residency requirement, with it being the last day of the month. He was very pleasantly surprised to hear that I had already managed to do it and any money he wanted to send my way could now be used for March and to help pay the costs involved in getting the insurances and bills for the upcoming residency renewal application. I needed to put the same amount in for March plus pay for the application, the new card, the transport, the Health insurance, Earthquake insurance, passport photos, and bringing the council tax and any bills up to date. I also needed to reconnect my Turkish phone number and add more credit for that. It was going to be costly, but this time I could apply for 2 years residency renewal so, to me, it was worth doing. I was too busy for breakfast, so just had a tea and a cuddle with the dogs. I worked all morning as it was the last day of the month and I wanted to try and get a last minute deal or two booked so that I got paid for it in March. Sadly, it didn’t happen as one potential customer had decided not to bother and the other potential customer wanted to think about it over the weekend and discuss it with the family. It did mean that I had not hit the target I had set for myself for March pay day and I would be moving in to Money-minded March from tomorrow. I already had plans to increase my opportunities and income for April, though.
I had leek and potato soup with a cheese sandwich for lunch and got back on with work while the dogs snored. In the afternoon, Captain Caveman sent me a photo of my free book that had arrived in London. Charlie Day had sent me her ‘Sales is Easy If You Just Know How’ and I was looking forward to getting my teeth in to that when I could. I checked on my Resort Experts business page to see how my week of using the marketing training had gone. I’d only been following the training for the last 4 days but I was impatient to see if it was having a positive effect. While the rest of the team had reported that engagement had increased, mine had gone down by 30%, in the last 7 days. Interestingly, the age and gender of my followers was changing so that I had attracted a few more men and had some younger people following now. Norman was restless and kept wanting to go out and then back in the door so I decided I would make him Chairman for the day and promoted him to sit on the chair next to me. Norman seemed happy but Edna was asleep and missed out on any extra responsibilities. The weather was very miserable so wine on a Friday was postponed, much to Edna’s disgust and she was obviously going to log it as a complaint.
After walking the dogs, I had pasta for dinner and had night 3 in a row, of zero alcohol. I snacked on pineapple which felt like a real treat as I don’t normally buy it.   I decided before bed to tot up my expenditure for February to see how I had done against my £400 budget. February had still been frugal but I had definitely felt like it had been a bit of an easier month, especially as it was a shorter month.
Does anyone fancy a guess at how I did against the budget?

Gratitude List
1. Call from Captain Caveman to say he would transfer me money for February
2. Captain Caveman giving me March’s money, instead, so that I didn’t have to worry or struggle
3. Fresh pineapple to nibble on.

Dalyan – 23rd February

Dalyan – 23rd February

There was no Sunday Walk, secret squirrel or otherwise, on Sunday 23rd February. It was just too cold so I had arranged to meet some friends at Kefal Tea Gardens (indoor area) for a bit of a send-off for Zen. He was going back to work so it would be the last time we saw him until mid-April. We decided on meeting at 11.30am and joining the big table there were 8 of us. I wrapped up warm as it looked so sunny but was very cold outside.

When I arrived, the waitress helped me to move the tables in to place, in a sunny corner of the indoor area. I ordered a large Turkish tea, there were no gözleme available today. Everyone arrived and we had a good chat and beverages before ordering food. I ordered the breakfast portion (without egg) and it was rather substantial for the price of 225.00 lira (£5). I even took some of it away as I couldn’t eat it all. The sun had been very warm where we were sitting so it was very nice to feel hot and I even had to take a few layers off. My total bill with 2 teas, plus another which came included with the breakfast, came to just 255.00 lira (£5.67). I really enjoyed my Sunday Turkish brunch with friends but we were all sad to say bye to Zen.
I got back in time to have a chat with a friend, living in Hoi An, Vietnam, as we were looking at planning a trip to Easter Island and Peru for her. Unfortunately, she had an incident at work so the call was put on hold. Around 5pm, I popped to the shops and here is what I bought with prices in lira;

Şok Supermarket
Fresh Garlic 64.90
Tomato Ketchup 39.00
Total spent 103.90 lira (£2.31)

Migros Supermarket
2 tins of tomatoes 44.92 lira (£1)

I still hadn’t managed to find a notepad and I had an important call tomorrow that I needed one for. After eating a chicken dinner, I went to look for a notepad. None of the nearest supermarkets had one but I bumped in to Kaan who took me to the Şevikoğlu where I got one for 49.90 lira (£1.11) in the sale. I walked back and called in BIM where I bought a couple of Dido chocolate bars for 39.00 lira (87p). I spoke to Captain Caveman who was in the Yorkshire Dales, he would be back in Dalyan in 5 weeks.
At 11pm I was on a live Facebook update with Lisa Johnson getting ready for tomorrow’s Race to Recurring Revenue, which I was really looking forward to.

Gratitude List
1. Breakfast at Kefal with friends
2. An enquiry for Peru
3. A new notepad finally purchased.

Dalyan – 21st & 22nd February

Dalyan – 21st & 22nd February

On Friday 21st February it was absolutely freezing. After tea and toast for breakfast and a couple of enquiries for Rhodes and Belfast I nipped to the bank to make sure I had put in the rest of the money needed for February. I was chuffed to have managed it and it meant that I would be able to apply for my Residency Renewal after the 1st March when I had the evidence in bank statements for the last 6 months. New cash machines had been installed so the queue took longer as people tried to figure out how to use them.
I had the rest of the feta and roasted vegetable pasta for lunch and then got back on with work. I have a Resort Experts colleague in Belfast who was able to give me some great tips on where to visit – so much so that I added Belfast to my own list of places to visit in the future. I completed all of my follow up calls that had agreed to them but I still had 2 potential customers that had not responded yet. I also got an enquiry for Vietnam about what the weather is like in March, and often people don’t realise how long the country is so there is quite a difference from North to South.
Dinner was more of the spaghetti and meatballs with half a bottle of red wine and catching up on watching episodes of ‘The Apprentice’. It is my guilty pleasure as it often reminds me of people I have worked with previously and I absolutely love Alan Sugar.
Captain Caveman messaged me at midnight to ask about the weather in Dalyan in April for a friend who was interested in a visit and, again, it can depend; sometimes it’s been hot and sunny and other years it’s been chilly or rainy.

Gratitude List
1. Completing all my Friday Follow up calls
2. Leftover meatballs
3. Wine.

Market day was upon us again on Saturday 22nd February and I decided I needed to go. I had quite a big list of what I thought I needed but I didn’t get there until lunch time. It had been so cold during the night and I was glad to have had 2 quilts plus extra blankets on the bed. I worked all morning as I was still working on 3 enquiries while I ate breakfast of tea and toast with cheese spread on. At the market, it was really cold in the shade so I didn’t hang about. Here’s what I bought with the prices in lira;

Stall 1
Onions 20.00 lira (44p)

Stall 2
Bananas, strawberries, mushrooms and a pineapple 445.00 lira (£9.89)

Stall 3
Peppers and courgettes 45.00 lira (£1)

Total spent 510 lira (£11.33)

This week I’d spent a bit more as I had treated myself to strawberries and a massive pineapple, but I thought it was worth the extra. After putting the shopping away and doing more work in the afternoon, I had a quick break. I went to Tez bar, just as the sun was going behind the mountains, for a wine with friends. I helped them with a search for a hotel in Rhodes. My wine cost me 170 lira (£3.78). After saying my farewells to my friends, I went to the supermarket. Here’s what I bought with the prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket
1 Bounty chocolate bar 34.90
1.5kg Washing Powder 89.95
A 1.6kg whole chicken 116.92
400g pack of fish fingers 159.95
Total spent 401.72 lira (£8.93)

The fish fingers were a bit of a luxury but were on offer, inspired by Captain Caveman after he had told me he had a fish finger sandwich so I had been fancying fish fingers ever since. I made a Slimming World style pizza using veg and meatballs for dinner as I’d only had a bit of fruit with Quark for lunch. I also had wine and later had a second dinner as I was still hungry; fish fingers with potato wedges.

Gratitude List
1. Getting to help more people find good holidays
2. Having my colleagues in the destinations to ask questions of
3. Having a catch up with friends.

Dalyan – 13th & 14th February

Dalyan – 13th & 14th February

On Thursday 13th February I had breakfast of tea and toast then walked the dogs. I spoke to Captain Caveman before lunch then had a banana and a chicken sandwich. Jamie and his guests arrived back earlier than expected so I was back home for a Webinar on Adult Escapes, our Team Meeting and another Webinar on AI with Mel at Sales Geek. All 3 meetings were excellent and I spent the afternoon doing all my follow ups. I also decided to sign up for some more free courses, including the well-known Race to Recurring Revenue with Lisa Johnson. For dinner I had defrosted a surprise meal from the freezer and found it was the remaining half of shepherd’s pie from the last time I was at Jamie’s – it was so tasty!

Gratitude List
1. A good Resort Experts Team Meeting
2. Being back home
3. Free Training Sessions

After tea and toast with marmalade I got on with my dog free day on Friday 14th February. It was Valentine’s Day but unfortunately I had decided not to go over to see Captain Caveman in the UK. It made sense to save money to build up some savings before splashing out on trips. The flights weren’t that expensive but it was all the other stuff I would want to do that would cost me money. It did mean that we had overlooked the need to get Captain Caveman’s IRATA log book back to him ready for his rope access course next week. Luckily, Jamie and his guests came to our aid and agreed to take it back to England with them and Captain Caveman would go and collect it. I was pleased with that as it meant we could use the money I would have spent on another trip, instead. I had Pho Ga and a green tea for lunch. I should’ve been meeting friends but they had to cancel as they had a workman popping round. I cracked on with some work and had a few Friday Follow ups to do before having a veggie curry and half a bottle of wine for dinner.
It felt a bit weird knowing that my actual book was launched and was available for people to buy. My Mom was going to have a call with me over the weekend and let me know what she thought.

Gratitude List
1. Help to get Captain Caveman’s log book back to him before Monday
2. You Can’t Shit Yourself on a Bicycle… being LIVE!!!!
3. Wine to celebrate being an author.

Dalyan – 3rd & 4th February

Dalyan – 3rd & 4th February

Jamie was due back at about midnight on Monday 3rd February and the dogs were looking forward to his return. I had my breakfast ‘cake’ with a cup of Yorkshire tea then got organised for my last day with Norman and Edna. I cracked on with some work before going to meet a friend who I’d not seen in ages. We met at the tea gardens for a cup of tea and a quick chat. I felt bad as my friend was up for going on outings but my schedule was not yet flexible enough that I wanted to be away from my laptop. My priority right now was building up my Resort Experts customer base and getting the handy travel tips book out there for people to buy. Luckily, she understood and I said, once I was in a better situation, I would let her know. I did mention her joining us for Sunday walks but she was busy then. Later, I walked the dogs and had soup for lunch. By which time, Captain Caveman was already on the train from South Yorkshire to Scotland for his first day in his new job. He would be near Glasgow for 2-3 days and had been put up in a hotel. I worked all afternoon and then took the dogs out again. I made a Slimming World veggie wrap pizza for dinner and had snuggles with the dogs until it was their bed time. I had a bit of an issue with my English phone number, in that it’s with GiffGaff and it doesn’t always get signal in Turkey – they advised me to reply to their text to keep my account but then it wouldn’t send! It was very frustrating so I put it on my To Do list to try to find another way to keep my number and change providers.
I spoke to Captain Caveman who had survived his first day at work and seemed content, which I was pleased about.

Gratitude List
1. Tea Gardens with a friend
2. Having a great team at Resort Experts
3. Norman and Edna.

I was super busy on Tuesday 4th February as I had work and my book project. I had decided that I needed to get the book published on Amazon KDP and Kobo so I had cracked on and loaded up both. The Kobo one was much easier to do but it then said, as I was in Turkey, that I couldn’t review what I had submitted and it would let me know in 3 working days when it was published. I had no idea about the lay out and if the cover looked ok, as it had auto formatted it, but I had submitted a book for publishing. The Amazon KDP submission was on hold as it was giving me issues. I forgot to have breakfast, had curry and rice for lunch and immersed myself in my To Do List while enjoying being back at my own desk today.
For dinner I just had cheese on toast but it was almost 11pm once I had finished work and I had another video call with Captain Caveman. He had a new work van so he was very happy and he filled me in on what he was up to in Scotland. There was news from Santorini that there were earthquakes and a scientist had said that it could be serious with a risk of a Tsunami so I got Captain Caveman’s advice on how that will affect the surrounding areas and if it would impact Turkey. I was meant to have had a video call with Vanessa too but I hadn’t had the time and had to move it to later in the week.

Gratitude List
1. Being back at my own desk
2. The sun coming in through the windows and doors of the apartment and warming up all of the house
3. Knowing Captain Caveman was happy with his new job.

Dalyan – 2nd February

Dalyan – 2nd February

I had an incredible day on Sunday 2nd February; Debbie and I were back to safety in numbers on a Sunday get together . Sezgin had invited Debbie, Mike and I for a trip to the beach. I had some work to do in the afternoon so it was perfect timing that I would go to the beach and be back before 5pm, which is 2pm UK time. I got a lift there with Debbie and Mike, who were still laughing at last Sunday’s debacle, so I was determined not to have another incident this week. We met Sezgin & Nur at Iztuzu Beach café where they introduced us to their son, Zen, for the first time. We all took a walk along the beach, it was beautiful and sunny – warm enough for a paddle too. It felt so nice to have the sand and sea between my toes and the breeze in my face.

We took a few photos, all chatted about a variety of subjects and I learned there was an alternative book publishing company to Amazon. Zen told me all about Kobo and how he used that to read books on his phone, without even the need to have a Kindle. All the young people he knew used this but I needed to look into it as I’d never heard of it.
We ate lunch at the beach and here’s the prices, in lira;

1 Water 15.00
1 Lemon Soda 30.00
1 Mixed Toastie 125.00
1 Tuna Salad 150.00
1 Chicken sandwich 150.00
Total spent 470.00 (£10.68)

We left the beach all happy to have made the effort to have a Sunday outing and I had a task for Sezgin back at Fire Opal.

Captain Caveman needed his Irata Log book which was in a cupboard above the stairs so, on the way home from the beach, Sezgin and Zen came to help get it down. Captain Caveman had told me where the key was which was to unlock a ladder, attached with a bicycle lock to the outdoor balcony. I was then to place the ladder half way up the stairs to be able to go up it to get one of the boxes out and pass it down to Sezgin. I didn’t want to try it alone in case I fell or hurt myself doing it, but by the time I had got the ladder unsecured, it was obvious that Sezgin was tall enough to not need it. Sezgin thought it hilarious that Captain Caveman thought he needed to secure a ladder to a balcony railing when we are on the second floor. The 2 men got both boxes down and all was good – no incidents, so I was very grateful. It did mean that I needed to take photos to send the contents of the book to Captain Caveman and then would have to take it to him if/when I went to visit. I was still hoping to go to England in a couple of weeks’ time.
I went back to Jamie’s and took the dogs out for a walk. In the evening I cracked on with work and was really pleased to be able to organise a family holiday for a good friend. For dinner I had a lentil and chickpea curry and then a cuddle on the sofa with the dogs who had been so well behaved today. Edna had not had as many snuggles as usual but she said she wasn’t going to complain if I could guarantee it was a one off. We had a video call with Captain Caveman who was preparing for his first day of work tomorrow. I was so proud of him and wished him luck, I admired how self-sufficient and confident he is and knew he would do well – his new employers were lucky to have him.

Gratitude List
1. An outing to the beach
2. The ladder fiasco which made us all laugh
3 Being able to help my friend with a surprise family holiday.

Dalyan – 31st January

Dalyan – 31st January

I was up early on Friday 31st January and I was slightly relieved to see the end of the January sales for holidays. I had tea and toast for breakfast and worked on quotes in the morning. I popped to the bakery in the afternoon for some bread which was still 10 lira (23p) for a loaf but rumour had it, it would increase by 50% tomorrow. For lunch I had some of Captain Caveman’s veggie soup with bread and in the afternoon I was able to concentrate on finding a holiday for a close friend who was looking for a family holiday in the Canaries.
That evening I had a chicken and veg pasta with some wine and watched some rubbish on TV. I also decided to tot up my spending for January as I wanted to check if I could afford to treat myself this weekend. Amazingly, I had managed to survive January on just £104! I was so proud that I had spent just over half of my £200 budget that I almost cried. I had paid the bills and my credit card off too so I was really happy. Tomorrow, I would meet my friends for breakfast and be able to afford to splash out at the market.
Now that I had proved to myself I could survive on very little, I decided I needed to really build up my savings so that I could afford some of those luxuries that others would call essentials; I still hadn’t been to the hairdressers since the beginning of June and it showed! Next month looked to be easier and I was looking forward to quite a good month.

Gratitude List
1. Being under budget and debt free on the last day of January
2. Getting busier with Resort Experts
3. Looking forward to a busy February.

Dalyan – 27th & 28th January

Dalyan – 27th & 28th January

On Monday 27th January I was looking after Norman and Edna while Jamie and Drew jetted off for some winter sun with friends. Jamie picked me up while it was practically still dark and the dogs were still a bit snoozy when I arrived. After a quick run through any changes to Norman and Edna’s requirements over a cup of tea, they were off. I had another cup of tea and some buttered toast for breakfast and felt a bit woolly headed as I got on with some work. At 12.30pm I joined a free sales mastermind with Charlie Day from The Sales Agency, which was interesting and gave me a few things to think about. Jamie had left me a cottage pie for dinner but I ate half of it for lunch, it was really tasty. The rest I put in the freezer for later in the week and hoped I wouldn’t forget about it. I worked some more and then took the dogs on a walk around Gulpinar.
For dinner I had a chicken dinner followed by a Dido chocolate bar, which I had forgot I had bought for Debbie and Mike yesterday, but had left them in the fridge. Thankfully, today was a relatively tame day compared to yesterday but I really did ache after my ordeal on Shits Creek.

Gratitude List
1. Norman and Edna – they always cheer me up
2. Having a desk and a chair to use
3. Cottage pie from Jamie

I woke up just before 8am on Tuesday 28th January and had tea and toast with cheese spread on for breakfast. I got on with work and found myself looking at some Japan itineraries which I fancied for myself. I did love Japan and would definitely visit again. I made some banana, oat, and peanut butter ‘cake’ for breakfasts/snacks before moving on to group tours in India in the afternoon. I had some of the ‘cake’ for lunch with oranges from a tree at Fire Opal and then got ready for my second day on the Charlie Day Challenge. In the afternoon I got a message from Ben, from Victory Road Villas in Phong Nha, my old boss and friend. One of the ladies from the Dalyan Ladies Night boat trips and the Sunday Walk was touring Vietnam with her husband, by bicycle, and was at Victory Road Villas enjoying a cold drink and some food. They were having an amazing trip, it was great to hear from them and get a couple of photos from Ben with the three of them on. I recommended that they call at Phong Nha Vegan and asked if they would be around there until the weekend to meet up with a couple of my friends who could show them around a bit, but they weren’t in town too long, just enough to rest those legs before cycling further south. I had a break from work to take Norman and Edna on a walk which they loved. Dinner was left over chicken dinner from yesterday and I did a bit more work before bed. It was that time of the month when lots of people were hoping they could book a holiday on pay day and get a good deal for later in the year. It was also hard to tell the difference between genuine customers and people who were bored at work and wanted to waste a bit of time looking for a holiday they only dreamed of going on. I got a message from a complete stranger in the afternoon who was interested in hearing more about me and my new book, after being on the Sales Course this week – that was nice. I spoke to Captain Caveman who was still doing well, he had been in the UK for 4 weeks now and was adjusting better than I would have been.

Gratitude List
1. Free Sales Training with Charlie Day, which was really good
2. An update from friends in Phong Nha
3. Seeing that Captain Caveman was happy in my home town, Sheffield.

Dalyan – 4th January

Dalyan – 4th January

My plans to go to the weekly market on Saturday 4th January were thwarted by the cold and rainy weather so I stayed in the warmth and worked instead. Even the velux window in the bathroom was taking a battering as rain water came in a bit. It looked like a terrible leak until I put a Tupperware under the drip and it was nothing. By 10am I had planned all my Resort Experts social media posts from my bed, while drinking a cup of Yorkshire tea. I was missing Captain Caveman getting up early to make me my tea, though. He’d messaged to say he was doing well in London and he was off out for a walk. He was also keen to plan some holidays and mentioned Marrakech and Laos to put on our 2025 list. He suggested us going somewhere in February around Valentine’s Day, as he can’t return to Turkey until his 90 days are up. He was also getting ready for a trip up to Sheffield and had booked the coach for early next week. I suggested he should arrange to see my parents if he got the chance and pick up my bank card from them. Unfortunately, my Mom had accidentally blocked Captain Caveman on Facebook a while ago and he could not message her without her phone number, I’d messaged Ma to say Captain Caveman might get in touch once he got to Sheffield but I had not heard back from her yet.
There was a Team Meeting at 1.30pm where we discussed some really important updates and laughed at how Jamie and I had nearly broken the new quote tool already. I had bread and soup for a late lunch and then did more work. More enquiries were coming in now, but with people wanting to book after pay day. This was good for enquiries but it did mean a bit more work as the prices can change constantly, meaning anything quoted now will have changed on the day of booking. For dinner I had pizza wraps and I heard back from Mom. She had been suffering with a cold and so wouldn’t be available to see Captain Caveman while he was in Sheffield. She said that it wouldn’t work out next week as they had a few things on in January. I was in bed relatively early as I needed to be up early tomorrow.

Gratitude List
1. Captain Caveman suggesting a holiday/romantic getaway
2. Being part of a helpful work team at Resort Experts
3. Being able to have nice food to eat.

Dalyan – 3rd January

Dalyan – 3rd January

I stayed in bed writing my blog on Friday 3rd January as it was too cold to get out. I put the AC on warm but it took a while to warm up the room. I had Pho Ga (chicken noodle soup), with the rather pricey lettuce in, for breakfast and got on with some work.
At 12.30pm a friend arrived to pick me up as I was going over to her place for a quick cup of tea and a catch up. It was nice to have an hour out and I went to the supermarket afterwards where I picked up a couple of bits. Here’s what I bought, prices in lira;

BIM Supermarket
Frozen sweetcorn 42.50
250g strong cheese 79.50
2 X 1kg basmati rice 110.00
Total spent 232.00 lira (£5.27)

While prices in general had gone up for the new year, basmati rice was on offer so both me and my friend bought a couple of bags as it’s not always in stock.
I had a cheese sandwich for lunch and decided I would have a curry for dinner. In the afternoon Jamie and I had a Resort Experts meeting at mine over a couple of cups of tea and we talked about what was working and what wasn’t. I’d already set my targets for the year and was on a bit of a mission.
I made a Slimming World Mauritian curry with leftover chicken kebab from the prison and almost gave myself food poisoning. When I cut it up, it was still still raw in the middle which may have accounted for why I had a bit of a dodgy tum as soon as I got home after dropping Captain Caveman off at the airport. Still, I had chopped all the ingredients and made the curry base now so I had it anyway. It tasted amazing but it was probably a little foolish. As it was a Friday I also had some wine as a bit of a treat. My stomach wasn’t great afterwards but I wondered if that just meant that the sun’s I’d counted for tonight, would no longer be contributing to my total.

Gratitude List
1. Being able to have a cup of tea with friends and their dog
2. Having Jamie to bounce ideas off
3. Speaking to Captain Caveman who was busy on the job searching front.

Dalyan – 2nd January

Dalyan – 2nd January

On Thursday 2nd January I had a busy and expensive day; Our water bill for last month was 351 lira (£7.98) and that was pretty good considering people had seen a rise in utility prices already. The electric bill was 250 lira (£5.68) for the month and of course was much less than usual as we weren’t home all the time.
I did my measurements and found that I had lost 1cm from my bust and waist, while my hips had stayed the same. On the home scales I was 0.25kg (0.5lb) heavier than my target which wasn’t bad considering how much we had been eating and drinking and that I had not tracked or stayed on plan at all this week.
At the first Fat Club of 2025 I stepped on to Carol’s scales to find that I was 0.25kg (0.5lb) under my target and I was really pleased and relieved. It was good to know that I had finally done it – I had achieved my goal weight of 66kg. In total I had lost 11kg (24.2lb) which is more than the weight of my full rucksack when I take it as hand luggage on a plane. In centimetres I had lost a total of 7cm from my bust, 13cm from my waist and 6cm from my hips and had gone from a size 16/18 to a size 12!Wow, I just needed those ‘before and after’ photos of me stood with a massive pair of trousers, as they do on the Slimming World adverts. What I found out from Carol at group was that once you hit your target, you are allowed some extra Healthy Options as well as a few more syns! I’m sure if I’d known that at the beginning, I’d have done it sooner. The Fat Club had really helped me be accountable, more disciplined and motivated to no longer be fat and I was so pleased to have been able to have the group support. Now, I just had to keep it off but I did decide that I was going to treat myself to something I fancied to eat that wasn’t good for me and that I’d been avoiding since August. I called at a couple of shops on my way home, here’s what I bought with prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket
1 Dido Chocolate bar 14.00
Cheese spread 29.90
1 tin chickpeas 29.95
1 pack of egg noodles 33.50
Cashew nuts 74.50
1 small iceberg lettuce 79.95
Mozzarella cheese 89.90
Total spent 351.70 lira (£8)

I did not check on the price of the lettuce as I wanted it for my Pho, but that was an expensive item at £1.82!

Şarküteri
1 pork sausage roll 50.00
3 tins of coconut milk 195.00
Total spent 245.00 lira (£5.57)

I knew the coconut milk would be pricey but it can be hard to get here so I bought the last 3 tins. After eating the sausage roll and not being that impressed with it, I realised I’d finally overcome wanting to eat food that was bad for me, more than I ever thought I would.
For dinner, I made Slimming World style pizzas which were lovely.

Gratitude list:
1. Being able to afford to pay the bills this month
2. Finally hitting my weight target at Fat Club
3. Eating a pork sausage roll as a treat then not being that impressed by it.
