Barnes to Sheffield – 6th April

Barnes to Sheffield – 6th April

Sunday 6th April would turn out to be quite an expensive day. The Flixbus I had booked for £35 was leaving London Victoria at 1.30pm. Captain Caveman had worked out when we needed to get the bus from Barnes to get there on time. I suggested that, because I walk slower and had my wheelie case with me, we could go earlier ‘just in case’. Captain Caveman wasn’t bothered about getting there too early and we stuck to his original plan. The bus came but we didn’t go the whole distance on it due to a traffic jam and us being stuck not moving for about 20 minutes. We were likely to miss the bus if we didn’t get off and walk but, of course, bus drivers these days will only let you get off at an actual bus stop. When we did eventually get off we had to run through Putney and over the bridge, full of tourists. It was hard work and we made it to a train station just as a football match was starting so it was busy. On the tube we went slightly wrong and had to backtrack but eventually got to Victoria station and ran to the bus station. It was a good job I was a stone or two lighter than I used to be as I would never have managed the run otherwise but I was quite pleased to even keep up. We had a feeling we were going to have missed the bus but still ran in to the Victoria Bus Station where I shouted that I was ‘coming through’ as I ran to the departure lane. There was no Flixbus to be seen so we assumed we had missed it, as we were 5 minutes after the departure time. I went for a pee while Captain Caveman went online to buy new tickets for the next bus. He couldn’t get it to work so he walked off to the ticket office when I returned. I checked my phone and had a text from Flixbus saying it was delayed by 15 minutes so it hadn’t arrived yet!!!
I called, text and messaged Captain Caveman but he didn’t answer and came back with 2 National Express tickets for £54, leaving from the opposite end of the station at 2pm. I was a bit peeved we had wasted more money on this but we didn’t see the Flixbus and might have been stuck in London until the evening if we didn’t get the 2pm bus, which we decided to do. The journey went well and we got off in the Sheffield bus station to then have to walk to the Hampton by Hilton at West Bar. It was £59.85 for the 2 of us including breakfast and was very comfortable.
Captain Caveman had already set his mind on going to a restaurant in Kelham Island which sold burgers. I’m not a burger fan really so asked if they did anything else. I also pointed out that it might be a bit of a waste of a hotel bed for me to eat a burger as, if I did, there was probably little chance of any romance – for me, burgers are the worst thing to eat on a date night! Captain Caveman was still adamant that he wanted the burger and said I could have cheesy chips, instead. On the way Captain Caveman bought us a pint each and some pork scratchings (back in Yorkshire!) in The Shakespeare. Next, we went to Saw Grinders Union and ordered a pint each and the bacon cheeseburger with fries. I had high hopes for it at £15.50 each, after all we were no longer in London. When it came it looked like a better version of a Big Mac and it tasted pretty good. I don’t understand the need to cover fries in red powdery dust, though. Captain Caveman had another pint and our whole meal came to a whopping £48.50. My stomach issues started before we even left the building and I made full use of the bathroom facilities back at the hotel. I knew I shouldn’t have eaten it – it was a bit of a waste of money too.

Gratitude List
1. Still getting to Sheffield from Barnes
2. The Hampton by Hilton Hotel being very nice
3. Still smiling despite today being a bit of a to-do, costing us £200 and ending on a belly ache!

Barnes – 4th & 5th April

Barnes – 4th & 5th April

Both Captain Caveman and I continued to have a busy working day on Friday 4th April. The difference being that I’d got used to working the evenings and weekends so I wasn’t used to logging off at 5pm on a Friday night. Captain Caveman had plans for us and we had also toyed with the idea of catching up with friends in London. I had 2 friends cancel so we decided we would have a night in Barnes rather than heading in to the Big Smoke. My friend and Resort Experts colleague in Majorca, Dagne, had finished my book and sent me a review which I was really pleased with. While Captain Caveman was in his morning meeting, I had my breakfast of beans on wholemeal toast, which I loved! At lunch we both ate at the table together and had sandwiches; mine was cheese and rocket (pickled onions on the side!), his was peanut butter and marmite. We both had meetings or training sessions in the afternoon and I was making progress on my Planner Ideation course.

After work, we walked along the river again and I got a text from one of my old school friends, Joanne, who had bought my book and I was so happy to hear from her. She sent me a fab selfie with the book and it made my day.
Captain Caveman took us for a drink in a pub which could have been the White Hart, where he had beer and I had cider for £15.
Our next pub was a visit to the really lovely Brown Dog. It was easily my favourite on account of it having several dogs in. I also ended up having a pint of rather strong rhubarb flavoured beer and being a bit tipsy on the walk home. It was £16.50 for 2 pints in there and a bag of crisps were £1.50!!
We walked home and, while Captain Caveman made us a chicken pasta dinner, I went back out to the shop to buy bread and wine. It all got a bit complicated at the self scanner when the assistant had to put in a code for me buying alcohol and then didn’t give me the wine back. He had taken the anti-stealing device off but left the wine by the door. I had to check with the Sainsbury’s security guard if it was my wine, he didn’t know, but said to take it. I paid £1.39 for a loaf and £9.50 for the wine.
Our dinner was really tasty and we tried to watch Celebrity Big Brother. Unfortunately, even after googling the contestants we only knew a couple of them and thought it was a bit boring.

Gratitude List
1. More great feedback for my book
2. English food
3. Going down the pub on a Friday night.

We had ideas on Saturday 5th April to either go to see a friend presenting at the Ideal Home Exhibition, do a trip to MI5, or spend some time at Richmond park. It was cold and I ended up doing some work, eating beans on toast again and then we didn’t go to any of our ideas. Instead, we decided to visit Marc Bolan’s memorial at the tree where he died in Putney. We decided to have a walk around the area and the sun did come out so it got warmer. We stopped at a cafe in a park for a hot beverage. Loo Loo’s cafe in Putney had homemade sausage rolls which we shared one of, with mint tea for me and a double espresso for Captain Caveman. It came to £10.50 and we sat outside the cafe looking at all the dogs that came in. So many more people in the UK seemed to have dogs than I remembered.

After the park, we walked towards Fulham football ground and, of course, my stomach had started to react badly to the sausage roll. We had to motor on until we found a pub so I could go to the toilet. The Crabtree in Fulham was the busiest pub I’d seen in a long time and there were 3 deep at the bar and queuing in the toilets. I almost shit myself outside a disabled toilet but I managed to make it to the normal toilet. When I got back, Captain Caveman was only just being served and when we found somewhere to sit we realised why it was so busy.

We watched the Grand National where Nick Rocket won and no horses died. We also did some banking while waiting to see if my sausage roll situation was over. It was, so we continued walking along the river and nearly got involved in learning how to argue better. I had a laugh at the Learn to Row poster which I’d pronounced as in arguement, as we didn’t need any help in that area. We saw Hammersmith bridge and then had another drink in the George & Devonshire in Chiswick. Compared to the last pub, it was so quiet but was a lovely pub with comfy seating.
We decided to splash out for dinner tonight and get the Indian Dine in deal from Marks & Spencer where we got the following;

M&S Food
Starter – Baji, pakora and samosa
Chicken Tikka Masala
Lamb Rogan Josh
Pilau Rice
£15 for the Indian meal deal
Carton of mixed Crackers £2.90
Brie £2.10
Total spent £20.00

It was a bargain and tasted amazing. I’d not had Indian food for quite a while and I guessed it wouldn’t be my first while in the UK. Captain Caveman drank Guinness with his and I just had tap water. Tonight was our last night in Barnes as we were heading north tomorrow for just a few days.

Gratitude List
1. Having a day off with Captain Caveman
2. Going for a walk around the area
3. Curry for dinner.

Barnes – 2nd & 3rd April

Barnes – 2nd & 3rd April

Wednesday 2nd April would usually have been weigh day but I was away from Dalyan, and in Barnes. I got weighed on Captain Caveman’s parents’ scales, I weighed 0.7kg (1.5lb) under target and was 1kg (2.2lb) less than last week. I actually didn’t think it would be accurate that I’d lost weight this week but it was good to check. My measurements showed that I had put 1cm on my bust and hips but I had lost 1cm from my waist (all were still under target).

It was a normal working day for both of us, so Captain Caveman went to his parents’ office upstairs and I set up at the desk in Captain Caveman’s old bedroom. We met up for breakfast at 10.30am and had my warmed up pizza from last night. Captain Caveman had lots of meetings while I cracked on with attracting new customers. We had a late lunch where Captain Caveman cooked us a brunch style meal. I had beans on toast with proper butter and 2 pork sausages – it was so good!!! He had egg and tomatoes with his. We both worked the rest of the day, me until 6.30pm. Captain Caveman suggested a walk with a trip to the pub and the supermarket and I was up for that. It was great to see and smell the freshness of Barnes, it was chilly but not raining. There were lots of fancy charity shops, dock leaves in the park and the cinema was finished. I had it on my list to go but at £20 a ticket I decided to leave it. I got a bit of a shock in the Red Lion when I paid for our round of 1 red wine and 1 pint of beer at £18.15. Our next drinks were in the Sun Inn and the same round came to ‘just’ £15.20. On the way home we popped to the shop again to get something for dinner. Here’s what we bought and the prices in pounds;

Sainsbury’s Supermarket
500g Carrots 0.49
3 onions 0.60
6 Crumpets 0.79
3 Peppers 1.95
500g 5% fat beef mince 3.99
Cheese 4.30
Red wine 9.50
Total spent £21.62

I was surprised to see that fag shelters had got fancier but the shops didn’t trust us not to steal mince! Captain Caveman knocked up a superb pasta bolognese and we shared a bottle of Primitivo red wine. I fell asleep on the sofa before I’d finished my wine as I was still a bit tired.

Gratitude List
1. A nice desk to work from with views of the garden
2. Going for an after work drink with Captain Caveman.
3. Great food, cooked by Captain Caveman.

Thursday 3rd April was another busy day in our world, we both had a lot on at work so we had arranged to squeeze in a 1 hour lunch date at noon. Cote restaurant was an Ask pizza place the last time I had been in Barnes so it was nice to try out this new place which had a lunch special on. Captain Caveman had a Crab Croque Madame and I had a steak baguette with fries, we both drank tap water and I really enjoyed it. It was quite fancy for a Thursday lunch and we had to rush as we both had meetings and calls from 1pm. The total bill, because of the offer, was only £18.65 for the 2 of us. We discussed plans for the weekend and decided we would travel up to Sheffield, my home town, on Sunday. My afternoon job was to book the bus tickets and find us a hotel to stay in on Sunday night as well as a hotel at Manchester airport for when Captain Caveman flew over to İzmir. I had a bit of time back as my Team Meeting had been postponed. Working for Resort Experts means that we get great prices on hotels so I booked both, including breakfasts, for less than £60 per night. The Flixbus for the 2 of us from Victoria to Meadowhall was a total of £34.98. At 6pm, as agreed, Captain Caveman and I finished work and decided to have a long walk along the River Thames, calling at the Ship Inn. He had a pint of IPA and I had a pint of Aspall’s cider for a total of £13. I was keen to find Pork Scratchings but I had a feeling that Barnes was a bit posh for that kind of snack, and never did. The next pub was the cheapest in the area I’d been in so far. The Hare & Hounds in East Sheen was just £13 for a pint of ale and a large red win.
On our way home we called in to Waitrose (it was a sign we were both working now!) and bought provisions;

Waitrose Supermarket
Baby potatoes 0.61
1 orange pepper 0.65
Penne pasta 0.75
1 Garlic Baguette 1.25
Wild Rocket 1.49
Pack of pears 2.00
Chicken fillets 3.49
Total spent £10.24

I also bought a folder from a newsagents and it cost a whopping £2.99 but I needed it for the next part of my Planner Ideation course. For dinner, Captain Caveman made a lovely chicken pasta with salad and we finished off the wine from yesterday with it.

Gratitude List
1. A fab lunch date with Captain Caveman
2. An after work walk and a drink along the Thames
3. Great food for dinner.

Dalyan – 26th & 27th March

Dalyan – 26th & 27th March

My day started with overnight oats and a cup of Yorkshire tea on Wednesday 26th March. It was Weigh Day so I got on the scales at home and I was a bit less than when I got weighed last week. Carol’s scales at Fat Club, as always, would be the real weight to go by but I suspected I may still be over target slightly. My measurements weren’t bad; no change on my bust which was now 2cm under target, 1cm on my waist which was still on target and 2cm off my hips making it 1cm under target. I was doing ok, even if the scales didn’t say that later.
I worked in the morning, then toddled off to Turkish Class at Lukka where I had a good Turkish tea.
For lunch I warmed up some of the left over pasta bake and then drank lots of water, before getting on with some work. I had 3 enquiries on the go at once today which I was grateful for. It was also good to see people had been recommending my Travel Advisor services. I’d not been doing the job 6 months yet, but I knew this was what I wanted to do – it was the perfect job for me. Although my book was doing ok, I didn’t think I could rely on the income from it too much so Travel was my next favourite thing. On the book front, I decided to write to various email addresses from the internet to see if I could get any of the big chains interested in stocking my book.
At Fat Club, I could only stay long enough for a cheeky weigh-in as I had an appointment! I was still 0.3kg (0.7lb) over my target weight but I had lost 0.9kg (2lb) this week. I was pleased with that result as I had not tracked my syns at all.
After the weigh-in, I rushed over to Jamie & Drew’s as it had been Norman’s 14th birthday yesterday. Jamie had saved me a piece of carrot cake to celebrate so we had that with a cuppa and a chat.
Back home, I was doing some work when Captain Caveman video called me. It was unusual for him to call me on a weekday lunch time, even more so while eating fish and chips from the chippy. He was outside my parents’ place and thought, as he’d not seen them since November, he would call in. He’d planned to see if he could buy them a fish and chip lunch as he was on his way home. He’d found the gate padlocked and couldn’t get in to knock at the door so had called me to see if I knew where they were, as he’d now got fish & chips from Tony’s and was really enjoying them. I explained they were away and Captain Caveman carried on shovelling in the food while I got jealous. It would be about 9 months since I’d had fish and chips – I said I’d add it to the list to do when I was back.
For my dinner, I then decided to have fish fingers and the rest of some chicken strippers from the freezer. I had a frozen yoghurt bar and I also finished off the pink grapefruit drink in the fridge. None of this was particularly Slimming World friendly.

Gratitude List
1. Being busy
2. Turkish Class
3. Losing weight.

Thursday 27th March seemed more chaotic than it probably should have been but I think it’s because I was a bit out of sorts. The weather forecast was getting worse for Captain Caveman’s arrival in 3 day’s time and, as he was only here for 2 nights I was a bit cheesed off. It meant that the surprise BBQ was off and we couldn’t do a boat trip either. It was also the Sugar Bayram which meant lots of places would be rammed full of Turkish tourists so if we went anywhere we might need to book.
In the morning I was busy with several holiday enquiries from around the globe and I had started to get requests for quotes for 2026, as well as late deals. For breakfast I had chicken, sweetcorn and egg fried rice with my Yorkshire tea. I attended a team meeting and there were so many updates. Our Quote system was having more improvements and I nearly couldn’t write down quick enough all the offers on at the moment; Solmar Villas had 50% off certain villas, easyJet and TUI were giving us £200 off the public price, Jet2 had £100 off for spring bookings, Classic Collection had £60 off and so many more!
I nipped to the bakery for a loaf and a simit, having the simit with cheese, olives and an apple for lunch. I’d put the slow cooker on to make soup but it wasn’t quite ready.
At 4pm I attended the 2nd Planner Ideation session which was a really useful Q&A. Here I learned more about what I was already doing in my business but how I needed to support my longer term goals and link to strategy. I was getting serious and passionate about helping people have more fulfilling holiday and travel experiences. I needed to think more about how my potential customers would relate to me, and what solutions I could provide for them.
I was meant to have a video call with Vanessa but I was frazzled and still working on stuff so we postponed it. I snaffled some strawberries while going down my To Do list with a highlighter to prioritise the ‘must do this week’ tasks. I enjoyed my veggie soup with bread which I didn’t end up eating until 9.15pm!

Gratitude List
1. More Resort Experts enquiries coming through
2. Great updates in the Resort Experts team meeting
3. Nice food.

Dalyan – 6th & 7th February

Dalyan – 6th & 7th February

I woke up to exciting news on Thursday 6th February; my book ‘You Can’t Shit Yourself on a Bicycle….….and other handy travel tips’ was published on Kobo 2 days earlier than expected. I was an author! People could now buy my eBook on Kobo and read 12 chapters of what not to do in various situations while abroad. It was an informative short book aimed at helping people like me who had never travelled to Vietnam or South East Asia before. I hoped my reader could get an idea how to experience better travel and have a few laughs at the situations they may find themselves in. My target audience was me, 15 years ago! I was a bit taken aback as I wasn’t expecting it to be published so fast but when I logged in to see it, the Kobo website told me I couldn’t buy my own book, as I was in Turkey. I sent the link to a Turkish friend to see if he could help in any way, but he couldn’t view it either. I also now had to figure out how to check it and get it marketed so that people would buy it. I’d had so many people say they would, while I was writing it, so I hoped so – I wanted to make a series of amusing handy travel tip books so that I could eventually get them published in book shops at airports. I would only make about £3-£4 per book so I couldn’t afford to set the price any lower than I had. I decided to see how it went, after all I do a blog for free so those readers might possibly support me as well as Facebook friends. I worked out that if I wanted the books to sell enough to support my residency in Turkey, I would need to sell at least 8 per day on each and every day of the year. I shared the link with The Aussies as Kobo can be used in Australia but they said they preferred to wait for the physical copy to be available. Kobo was eBook only.
Jamie popped round to bring me 2 light fittings that he didn’t want, but Captain Caveman did, and we had a hot beverage and a chat. I told him about me becoming an author of a handy travel tips book and he too said he would like the physical copy, not an eBook. I messaged my Mom and she was also in favour of a physical copy of the book so it looked like I needed to work out how to get that sorted out.

I had more of Captain Caveman’s veggie soup with pasta for lunch and it was really tasty.
Our team meeting with Resort Experts was at 2pm where Jamie did an update about Turkey which was really good. After that, I cracked back on with more work and then decided to pop to the shops as I had run out of Fabric Softener. I made the mistake of going before eating dinner and bought some treats plus a whole chicken which was on offer. Here’s what I bought with the prices in lira;

Migros Supermarket (6.30pm)
1 Bounty chocolate bar 34.90
1 pack Marshmallows 34.95
1l Pink Grapefruit 39.90
Lentils 39.95
Fabric Softener 95.95
A 2.3kg chicken 182.57
Total spent 428.22 lira (£9.73)

It was a sign I had upped the budget this month as I seemed to be doing Frivolous February, instead of Frugal February.
I warmed up some of the leftover vegetable curry for dinner with steamed rice and decided to finish off the rest of the wine I had opened yesterday. At 9pm I had a video call with Vanessa who is back in Sheffield and was asking how we were both doing in our new jobs. She was hoping to catch up with Captain Caveman since they were both in the same city. We were on the phone for about 2 hours talking about anything and everything and it was nice to speak to a Dalyan friend who knows me well. When I told her about my newly published book she was up for buying it once it was available on Amazon for her Kindle!

Gratitude List
1. Having my book published on Kobo
2. Free light fittings from Jamie
3. Catching up with Vanessa.

When I woke up on Friday 7th February, it was so cold at only 3°C, with a feels like -1°C because of the wind. I stayed in my office with the AC on until the sun came out enough to warm the room up a bit more. I had wholemeal toast with cheese spread for breakfast and then had a hot chocolate with marshmallows mid-morning to keep warm. I worked all morning and signed up from some ad-hoc free trainings and webinars to increase my earning potential and freshen up my sales skills. After more soup at lunch, I finished off all my follow ups and then decided I was going to tackle Amazon KDP once again. Captain Caveman had suggested I set up a new email and reregister just for the purpose of the book(s), so I did, and faffed about for ages trying to load my manuscript on to their bespoke system in the right format. I worked on it for so long that I forgot to have any dinner and later had cheese and wine before bed. I also got a message from Vanessa to say she had sorted out a suitcase for Captain Caveman to use to bring over to Dalyan at the end of March – this was so good of her!

Gratitude List
1. Finally getting somewhere with Amazon KDP
2. Managing to stay warm in my spare room/office
3. Helpful friends in Sheffield.

Dalyan – 27th & 28th January

Dalyan – 27th & 28th January

On Monday 27th January I was looking after Norman and Edna while Jamie and Drew jetted off for some winter sun with friends. Jamie picked me up while it was practically still dark and the dogs were still a bit snoozy when I arrived. After a quick run through any changes to Norman and Edna’s requirements over a cup of tea, they were off. I had another cup of tea and some buttered toast for breakfast and felt a bit woolly headed as I got on with some work. At 12.30pm I joined a free sales mastermind with Charlie Day from The Sales Agency, which was interesting and gave me a few things to think about. Jamie had left me a cottage pie for dinner but I ate half of it for lunch, it was really tasty. The rest I put in the freezer for later in the week and hoped I wouldn’t forget about it. I worked some more and then took the dogs on a walk around Gulpinar.
For dinner I had a chicken dinner followed by a Dido chocolate bar, which I had forgot I had bought for Debbie and Mike yesterday, but had left them in the fridge. Thankfully, today was a relatively tame day compared to yesterday but I really did ache after my ordeal on Shits Creek.

Gratitude List
1. Norman and Edna – they always cheer me up
2. Having a desk and a chair to use
3. Cottage pie from Jamie

I woke up just before 8am on Tuesday 28th January and had tea and toast with cheese spread on for breakfast. I got on with work and found myself looking at some Japan itineraries which I fancied for myself. I did love Japan and would definitely visit again. I made some banana, oat, and peanut butter ‘cake’ for breakfasts/snacks before moving on to group tours in India in the afternoon. I had some of the ‘cake’ for lunch with oranges from a tree at Fire Opal and then got ready for my second day on the Charlie Day Challenge. In the afternoon I got a message from Ben, from Victory Road Villas in Phong Nha, my old boss and friend. One of the ladies from the Dalyan Ladies Night boat trips and the Sunday Walk was touring Vietnam with her husband, by bicycle, and was at Victory Road Villas enjoying a cold drink and some food. They were having an amazing trip, it was great to hear from them and get a couple of photos from Ben with the three of them on. I recommended that they call at Phong Nha Vegan and asked if they would be around there until the weekend to meet up with a couple of my friends who could show them around a bit, but they weren’t in town too long, just enough to rest those legs before cycling further south. I had a break from work to take Norman and Edna on a walk which they loved. Dinner was left over chicken dinner from yesterday and I did a bit more work before bed. It was that time of the month when lots of people were hoping they could book a holiday on pay day and get a good deal for later in the year. It was also hard to tell the difference between genuine customers and people who were bored at work and wanted to waste a bit of time looking for a holiday they only dreamed of going on. I got a message from a complete stranger in the afternoon who was interested in hearing more about me and my new book, after being on the Sales Course this week – that was nice. I spoke to Captain Caveman who was still doing well, he had been in the UK for 4 weeks now and was adjusting better than I would have been.

Gratitude List
1. Free Sales Training with Charlie Day, which was really good
2. An update from friends in Phong Nha
3. Seeing that Captain Caveman was happy in my home town, Sheffield.

Dalyan – 24th January

Dalyan – 24th January

There was another breakthrough with Lady C on the morning of Friday 24th January, she actually came to the bin with me and walked the opposite direction to what she would usually want to go. The big cockerel wasn’t there so she wasn’t scared. I decided to attempt to list my book on Amazon again and reset my password but then it sent me a code again to a phone number I didn’t have. I decided I would look in to other options as I wasn’t an Amazon fan anyway. After my new breakfast option, which was just as good cold, I cracked on with work so that I could perhaps finish early. I was pleased for Captain Caveman that he was going to the cinema and London today, and I wished I was joining him. The last time I went to the cinema was probably to see the Barbie film in Fethiye ages ago.
At home, I noticed that the building next door, which had been demolished and rebuilt, had a concrete roof on but no metal reinforcement in. This either meant that they were not replacing the second floor or that the next floor they added would not be earthquake proof. It was apparent from speaking to some locals that the authorities were cracking down on illegal builds and structures that didn’t comply with the rules. For dinner I had made a lentil bolognese in the slow cooker which I had with some of my recently purchased Gamay wine after a nice dog walk.

Gratitude List
1. Lady C coming to the bin with me
2. Finishing work early on a Friday
3. Slow cookers and wine.

Dalyan – 3rd October

Dalyan – 3rd October

Thursday 3rd October gave me an opportunity to sort my banking out for the new month to make sure I put the required amounts in to my Turkish bank. I had already got my 6 months residency renewal but I would need to apply again in 4 months with evidence of 6 months of payments. The weather was hotting up as I gave Norman and Edna their breakfast then decided I was going to apply for some more jobs including a part-time remote Sales Consultant for a UK company. I had tea and toast for my breakfast, followed by a snack of feta cheese and an apple when I got peckish. I was also in discussions with Mehmet, the gardener, again as I decided I was going to complain that he still hadn’t sorted out my bushes to be able to hang my washing out but he had done some stuff on the other side of the complex. He said the lads would be there at 10am, they didn’t come and when I complained he said they had forgotten. They eventually came but it did take unnecessary time out of my day with all the chasing.
Mehmet’s lads arrived at Fire Opal around 1.30pm, but I was at Jamie’s so I went back over to check – it had been done, finally! I treated myself to an açma for lunch which I had with some of Vanessa’s jam on.

Back at Jamie’s with Norman & Edna, they had a bone each, I had some leftover chickpea curry and then got ready for a rare night out in Dalyan. I had decided to invite Vanessa on a dog walk with me, Norman & Edna where we would call for my parents and then meet Linda at Ela’s Kitchen. I was keen to see my parents and hear all about their recent trip to Cappadocia plus it was 2 days since Linda had arrived for her week’s holiday in Dalyan so I was looking forward to checking on how she was doing. It was also Happy Hour at Ela’s and I know the dogs really enjoying going there on their evening walk along the river and through town.
Vanessa got lost and ended up at the wrong end of the street and had to rush to catch me up. Norman and Edna were on a mission to eat cat poo so Vanessa and I shared the holding of the dogs. Vanessa was so busy telling my parents all about her recent trip to Datça that Edna got away with munching a little bit of cat shit outside my parents’ place.
Edna and Norman were as excited as me to reach Ela’s Kitchen where Happy Hour was very welcomed. At only 120 lira (£2.67) for a decent glass of wine, I managed to polish off 3! Vanessa was on water and was updating my parents on all her trips she had planned. Linda hadn’t got my message until later due to having been down Iztuzu beach all day, but joined us still in time for Happy Hour.
When Vanessa left to go back home, the rest of us decided we would like to all eat out together this evening. My parents suggested to Linda and I that we go to Firat’s for food as it is one of their favourite Turkish restaurants and I agreed. I had to wait until the sausages, which Sev had cooked for the dogs, were a bit cooler before I could walk them home. Norman & Edna love Sev’s sausages and were so happy to get one each. We paid and I left a tip to account for the sausages and water bowls, as not all establishments are that welcoming to pets. While the others finished their drinks, I hurried back to drop the dogs home and then rushed back.

I was back to join Ma, Pa & Linda within 20 minutes of leaving Ela’s Kitchen and I had even got changed. The 3 of them had managed to get a great table at Firat’s and it was a busy 9pm already. We ordered a bottle of Angora wine which was 650 lira (£14.50) between the 4 of us and we had complimentary balloon bread (lavaş) to start with. All of us went straight for mains and I had a delicious chicken shish. My mom had the fish as it’s her favourite thing on the menu, Linda ordered lamb and dad chose chicken. The main courses ranged in price from 400 lira (£8.90) to 600 lira (£13.36) and our total bill with wine came to about £60 for the 4 of us, which I would say was very reasonable. We all had a really good meal and then decided it would be a good idea to walk Linda back to her accommodation, at Riverside Hotel. I’d never been before, the 4 of us sat on high stools at the pool bar and ordered a nightcap, or two. Ramazan, who my parents and I knew from his previous locations, was working the bar and had a good chat and a drink with us.

Dalyan – 8th September

Dalyan – 8th September

I only had a cup of tea on the morning of Sunday 8th September as I was busy checking out the updates on Typhoon Yagi and the havoc it had wreaked in Hanoi, before I headed off on a day trip. I was happy that Captain Caveman was safe in Hanoi now but still worried he would be ok on the 5th floor of a building. He assured me he was fine, despite the capital city looking like it was a scene from the film ’28 Days Later’.

I was off on a boat trip which started at 10am with Captain Fuat on Adıl boat with some friends and family. There was a quick introduction for everyone then tea/coffee and some simit to nibble on as we sailed out towards Köyceğiz and the lake. The sun was shining, the scenery was lovely and I was looking forward to a day out with Gayle & Neil. Captain Fuat put on a delicious lunch which catered for everyone’s requirements easily (and there were quite a few of us that needed different allergies taking in to consideration). I obviously was not really concerned about the amount of syns I shoved in. I ate chicken, pasta, salads, meatballs, bread, fruit and, later, cake.

We did quite a bit of swimming, where we met a friendly terrapin who we called Bob. He took a shine to Ann’s chest and kept going really close to her, even though she wasn’t keen. He even went off and brought 2 more friends over who swam amongst us and seemed to want to play with us. We called these 2 terrapins Rita & Sue and then when we thought Bob had returned, but it was actually another terrapin who was slightly more interested in the ladies and their chests, we called him Bob 2. I probably found it funnier than most other guests that we had called our new friends Bob, Rita, Sue & Bob 2 after the film.
The day was really relaxed and easy going with lots of swimming, which I loved. By the time we got off the boat I was quite merry and I’d gone way over my usual wine consumption by having 5 glasses.

We got off and said our goodbyes to everyone. Ann, Stuart, Gayle, Neil and I were walking the same way home so we ended up stopping off for a quick drink in Askın’s where I ordered a pint of draft Efes. I ended up having a gin & tonic at Neil’s insistence, back at theirs and then Jamie, Drew, Norman & Edna were passing for the dog walk so they popped in to say hello. Edna took to Neil very quickly and wanted to sit on his knee while Norman had a sniff about to check for any scraps of food. I did the dog walk with Jamie & Drew and then realised I was a bit tipsy and peckish. The night ended with me getting pizza that I didn’t recall until the next day.
My Sunday had been so good and I still managed to do it on a budget; the boat trip plus drinks on the boat 2100 lira, a beer at Askın’s 120 lira and pizza 310 lira – a bargain total of 2,530 lira (£52.81).

Dalyan – 5th to 7th September

Dalyan – 5th to 7th September

It was a busy day in my world on Thursday 5th September. My sister and her husband were arriving tomorrow so I had to make sure that my parents’ place was ready for them. I only had a biscuit for breakfast as I had to go to meet the cleaner at my parents’ apartment. There is only 1 key so I said I would meet her back there at noon
I had a morning in Ortaca where I first went to the council office to identify which property I actually lived in on their maps and get an address certificate, then I paid the council tax up to date at a cost of 2426.20 lira (£54.16) to bring everything up to date in order to proceed with my residency renewal application. The next job was to call to see the insurance broker where I got myself a new annual policy for 1,924.20 lira (£42.95) but was very basic cover and probably doesn’t really cover anything but accident and emergency.
Back in Dalyan, I walked over to my parents’ trying to get there in time to pick up the key. It was hot and I hadn’t put any sun-cream on as it was packed. As I arrived at 11.59am I saw the cleaner riding away on her motorbike. I left my bags, including wine and stuff for the fridge, outside the door and walked to King Emlak to retrieve the keys. Once there, I had a bit of a chat with Leanne, picked up the keys and walked back, a sweaty mess.
I stayed there for a glass of water and a pot noodle then had a call with my boss. Things weren’t very good for him as his son was in hospital in Hanoi, and it was quite serious.
I warmed up a mystery defrosted dinner and added some pasta to it for my dinner. Tomorrow I was going to enjoy a leisurely day before my sister and brother-in-law arrived.

It was a long day on Friday 6th September. My sister, Gayle, and her husband, Neil, were going to be arriving at Dalaman airport at 10pm tonight so I was making sure everything was ready for their arrival. My Mom had given them a spare key for the apartment but she wasn’t sure if it worked as it was a newly cut one that had not been tried yet. I had the other key so it had been arranged that I would be at the apartment when they arrived tonight. I started the day with tea and toast while reading the news that a typhoon was about to hit North Vietnam. Captain Cavemen was currently in Sapa but was due to travel to Hanoi very soon. He called me while he was out walking with our friends and didn’t seem unduly worried about the weather at that point. I got on with as much work as I could and tried not to worry about the weather in Vietnam. I just had a cheese and crisp sandwich for lunch. I had a break from work and popped over to check the elusive gardener at Captain Caveman’s apartment, it was impossible to tell if he’d done anything and it still looked uncared for, in my opinion. Then I popped to Captainnet to sort out my parents’ internet and extend it for the month. This cost 675 lira (£15.13) for the top plan, as my Mom would be organising for the TV Firestick to be put on for Neil. I bumped in to Drew who was at Mono & More with Pete & Carol so I stopped for a pot of green tea. It was very hot today and I was all of a fluster so it was nice to sit and have a quick catch up. The tea was really good and only 60 lira (£1.35).
I also called at the bank to transfer the rest of the required amount in to my Turkish account, this then meant that I could get the print out of my account to show the deposits for the last 8 months, including this month. On the way back, I noticed that there was a new clinic in town, next door to Şok supermarket in the old market square, where they displayed information and access to a private ambulance, as well as various cosmetic procedures like mammoplasty, gastric sleeve, hair transplant, liposuction, botox and filling. I said hello to Lou Colson who was working there now, as the receptionist, so she was the first point of contact to book appointments for these sorts of procedures which were very popular in Turkey now.
The rest of the afternoon was spent working and then I went over to my parents’ apartment to make sure everything was ready for the new arrivals. Luckily I had my laptop and something to eat at the ready so that I wasn’t sat about doing nothing. I warmed up a chicken casserole for dinner and opened a bottle of rose wine while I tracked their flight. Unfortunately, they were delayed but when they arrived they were very excited to be in Dalyan. We opened a bottle of fizz that I’d had chilling and Neil had a beer in an iced glass. Gayle is coeliac so I’d got some rice crackers with prawn, pork and spring onion (Banh Ep, from Vietnam) for her to nibble on. It was 1.30am when I got to bed and I was quite tired so I didn’t take long to fall asleep.

When I woke up on Saturday 7th September, I checked the news to see that Hanoi had most certainly been hit by typhoon Yagi and it looked pretty horrendous in parts of the capital city. Captain Caveman was safely in Sapa but was going to head to Hanoi today. I was concerned and said he shouldn’t travel but stay where he was until the storm had passed. He thought it better to get out while he still had the chance. I got on with lots of work and decided, while my boss was caring for his sick son in a typhoon, I would make the most of finding new sales opportunities from Facebook and news articles where Travel Agents were posting about the weather conditions.

I’d mentioned going to the Saturday market with Gayle & Neil but they couldn’t be bothered so I went much later than usual and it was unbearably hot with a full rucksack. I got some bargains, here’s what I bought and the prices in lira;

Saturday Market
Mushrooms, Grapes & 3 peaches 85.00
4 onions 5.00
3 red & 3 green peppers 15.00
Plums 30.00
4 Apples 30.00
16 fresh figs 100.00
Total spent 265.00 lira (£5.94)

On the way back I also called at the shop for other essentials;

BIM Supermarket
1.5l Water 6.50
2 soda water 12.00
3 tins sweetcorn 61.75
Total spent 80.25 lira (£1.80)

I still needed more and had to drop the stuff off then go back to the supermarket. I decided to treat myself to more water and some juice as I was super thirsty. I was surprised to see the difference in the price of a bottle of water between Migros and BIM, though.

Migros Supermarket
1.5l Water 25.25
Croissant 27.95
Milk 28.25
Washing up Liquid 33.95
Cherry and Apple juice 49.95
Total spent 165.35 lira (£3.71)

I had juice and a croissant for breakfast which was not Slimming World friendly and then another cheese sandwich for lunch. I worked for the rest of the afternoon and the AC from the bedroom cooled the dining area enough too.
Captain Caveman arrived during the eye of the storm and managed to get to his hotel unscathed, but the damage in a lot of Hanoi was bad. I had a quiet Saturday night in and had figs, plums and grapes while cooking a really good mushroom risotto for dinner. I had an early night, while Hanoi got hit by the worst storm that they had encountered since 1964.

Sheffield to Otford – 4th August

Sheffield to Otford – 4th August

I’d taken the day off work on Sunday 4th August as I was leaving Sheffield and going to visit Claire in Sevenoaks for a week, before flying back to Turkey in 8 days’ time. Claire had already offered to take me to Gatwick airport when I left so that I could get back in time for Nanny Kay’s birthday meal on the 12th. Even though my National Express bus from Sheffield bus station was at 12.45pm, I had decided to go early because of the delays we had with Captain Caveman’s departure. At 10am I was outside the garage door with my suitcase, waiting for my parents to lock up and come with me. Dad had my rucksack, complete with teabags and wine bucket – it was finally leaving Mosborough!
We arrived in to the bus station before 11am and decided to walk over to the nearby train station. None of us had eaten breakfast but when I take a bus I refrain from it so that I don’t have a bad stomach. While Ma went and got her and Pa bacon sandwiches and coffee at the Starbucks, I bought a bottle of water for £2.49 in WH Smiths – how much!? I should’ve brought tap water but I didn’t have a bottle to put it in.
When the Sheffield Tap opened (at 11am) my parents were still eating their bacon sandwiches as there had been a long queue. We decided to have a pint in the pub before it was time for me to walk back to the bus station. A pint of pale ale, a stout and a cider cost me about £15 – better value than bottled water!
We walked back to the National Express stop where there were 2 buses and I said my goodbyes and thanks to my parents. I got on the second bus which wouldn’t be stopping at Golders Green but going directly to Victoria, just what I wanted.
I sat about 3 seats from the front next to a man who, when he was on the phone was quiet, so I liked that. The drivers were not quiet, however, and we had to listen to endless drivel about their colleagues and political opinions all the way. We stopped off at Northampton services for a toilet break and I bought some sweets and some chocolate as I was peckish. £5.50 for 2 bags was a bit of an extravagance but that included a supposed £2.48 discount and I did have to use a self-scan check-out.
We arrived in to London Victoria bus station on time at 5.15pm and I had a train to Otford due at 5.42pm. I went straight for the information desk and they told me which platform. Captain Caveman had already bought me the train ticket when he bought me the bus one and I just made the train. By the time we were pulling in to Otford station I didn’t even realise mine was that stop but saw Claire waiting on the platform. It was great to see her after what we think is probably over 5 years!
We got to her house and was met by Reg, the cute pup. I met 3 of the 4 kids as Bee, ironically, was in Turkey and Mark for the first time. The Prosecco was opened and an amazing roast pork Sunday dinner was dished up – my first since being in England! We had a great night, drinking fizz and later rum while catching up and I felt like we’d not really been apart. My bedroom was so lovely with a comfy bed and I slept so well that night.

Sheffield – 3rd August

Sheffield – 3rd August

My original plan was to be leaving Sheffield on Saturday 3rd August but things were a bit fluid on the arrangements for various reasons. Ma & Pa had a great idea that they wanted to celebrate me leaving Sheffield and, as they had not fancied joining us last night, suggested we go to The British Oak later and I was definitely up for that. I had a tea and buttered crumpet for breakfast then I got everything packed and weighed. Dad had to help lift my suitcase which was 22kg – 2kg over! But my hand luggage, with 500 teabags in a wine bucket inside, was surprisingly bulky but underweight. I still had a week down south but it did mean I couldn’t put any more into my luggage. My new Herdy backpack had ripped so I called the shop to let them know. Kathy, the assistant, remembered Captain Caveman and I and said to call back on Monday to get a replacement sent, which was great service – Nationwide could certainly learn a lot!
I did 6 hours of work as I knew that tomorrow I would be on a bus and I had my leftover curry for lunch followed by a chocolate bar I’d never tried before – a caramel KitKat.
We booked the table at the British Oak for 7pm but Dad was ready early and we decided a drink in the bar first was a good idea. I got a couple of rounds in, and was surprised that 4 pints and 2 halves of cider came to only £22. For dinner we ordered a nice bottle of red wine and starters of calamari for Mom and tomato soup for Dad and me. The soup was overly peppery but Dad was convinced it had chillies in it and that I would be ill but all was good and I quite enjoyed it. For mains I was torn between having pork or a pie, neither of which I will eat back in Turkey so I went for the steak pie. Dad went for the pork and Mom had a crispy lamb dish. All the food was excellent and probably the best I’ve had in there, ever. Dad ordered well this time and I was even envious of his big rib. The total bill came to £89.10 and included a bottle of Merlot and a large glass of Chardonnay. I tried to contribute and suggested I get the wine but my parents insisted they treat me for my final supper! It was a fabulous evening and a small miracle occurred; I got a wonderful photo of my parents where Dad wasn’t larking about and my Mom wasn’t looking away. The walk back at 9.30pm was so cold that we were all shivering and it had dropped down to 17.5 degrees! Back home, Mom and I had a Baileys and Dad had a wine nightcap. We all agreed we would get up early tomorrow as Ma & Pa had decided to come in to town with me to see me off!

Sheffield – 2nd August

Sheffield – 2nd August

I got up really early on Friday 2nd August so that I could do some work before Mom got up, as she had kindly offered to take me shopping to Aldi before I left. I’d had to amend my shopping list as I didn’t want to be struggling to carry everything. At one point there was a suggestion from me that the wine bucket in my hand luggage was perhaps over ambitious but I feared that if it didn’t go this time, it would be at the charity shop or tip very soon. We didn’t stop out long as I needed to be out in the afternoon because I was having some leaving drinks in Sheffield later. There is a new Aldi near my parents’ house so we went there and I was very impressed. Here’s what I bought, prices in pounds;

Aldi Supermarket
1 packet mix £0.36
Cream Crackers £0.49
Garam Masala powder £0.75
Sandwich bags £1.15
2 packs of vegetable stock cubes £1.30
Antihistamine tablets (2 packs) £1.58
Marmite £2.99
Yorkshire Teabags £5.49
Total spent £14.11

On the way back, I was going to pop in to say bye to my sister, brother-in-law and nieces as they were off on holiday this weekend, but Gayle was at the gym. Instead, we went back home and I had a cheese sandwich and some pickled onions for lunch.
That afternoon, I caught the bus in to town and wandered via the bank to put in the £50 I had been told I needed to do to close my bank account. Unfortunately, the guy at the counter told me I was mistaken and that the charges had all been removed and left the balance with £2 something in. I made him print it out and check 3 times because I didn’t actually believe him. The print out showed it was no longer in a negative balance so I asked to close it. Unfortunately, the man at the counter couldn’t do that as Jeff does that job but only works Monday to Wednesday. I was fuming and left, knowing another charge would be on it later in the month of £13 which would make me overdrawn again! I was told to come back Monday but I knew I would be in London so made a note to find a branch down south to try again.

I’d arranged to meet friends at The Grapes where they still operate an old style boozer; the bar staff chat pleasantries, add up in their head, top your drink up and let you pay by cash – marvellous. Becca and Steve, who make my face ache from laughing so much, were already there, Steve got me a cider and we went to the beer garden at the back. Before long we weren’t absolutely howling with hysterics as I confused Steve about anything to do with my itinerary. They had just moved house so none of us were familiar with bus routes round that area and weren’t sure of the last bus back. They don’t use cash much so I gave them some and they transferred to my Wise account to make it easier. Next to arrive was Holly, who I knew from when she worked at Easy Tiger in Phong Nha, Vietnam, and had recently moved to Mosborough – what a freaky coincidence and good to see her again. Paul & Natalie arrived and they were shocked at the no card rule so I got the drinks in and they could get the next one in my second venue choice.

We met Louisa, Linda, Martin, Adam, Kerrie, Paul, Nikola and Tom at Fagan’s as I thought it would be a good place to go before our curry. It was so good to see everyone and I didn’t even realise that some of the crowd from the old Aviva times, I hadn’t met up with for almost 10 years! We even established that I’d known Natalie’s Paul the longest and I was a bit gutted that I couldn’t see even more people while I was back but it was the school holidays and people were already busy with other plans. I needed to appreciate more that it’s not all about me, sometimes!

The time went so quickly that I almost felt bad that I had booked a table for a curry at Butler’s Balti for 8pm. Everyone was invited but most people were only able to come for drinks. I didn’t know if it might be my last proper Indian meal for a while. I said my goodbyes but not without some amazing photos in front of The Snog – a Pete McKee picture with Frank & Joy and one of my favourites. It was only right that Kerrie should take the photos as she has a connection to Pete.

At Butler’s there were Louisa, Linda, Martin, Adam and later Rachel joined us, after getting the kids to bed. The meal turned out to be quite pricey but delicious and I did have a bit left over for tomorrow. We had 2 poppadoms each and a pickle tray, I had veggie samosas to start, a chicken tikka masala for main, shared some rice, a garlic naan and I had a glass of the bottle of red wine. We nearly got another bottle when it didn’t stretch to 8 glasses but I still had to get the last bus home so was happy with the one. We were quite a walk from Pond Street bus station and I was bound to need a wee. As I was due to leave, the usual shenanigans of it not being enough money to cover the bill occurred and it took a lot of faffing about. I put £32 in which should have covered the tip as well but it didn’t and Rach ended up putting £15 in for a chicken pakora starter and a pint of lager. After saying final farewells and legging it for the bus with Rach, we reached Norfolk Street out of breath and desperate for a pee. We decided we would have a swift half and a pee in the Brown Bear, while I called Mom to tell her I had missed the last bus and might only be able to get as far as Birley or Halfway and to not lock me out of the gate if they went to bed. The Brown Bear was now a Digital Detox Pub with a strongly upheld No Swearing Policy! FFS! I couldn’t believe it and I got told off for using my phone! With a water bottle full of cider we headed for a bus, dodging the Spice heads on route. I made it to the bus station unscathed as I looked like a mental person carrying a bottle of piss! I finally got home, phone on silent so had not noticed Louisa checking I was home! What a great Sheffield send off and tomorrow would sadly be time to say bye to my parents.

Sheffield – 1st August

Sheffield – 1st August

I was awake really early on Thursday 1st August, contemplating life in general with it being the start of the month. It had been over 3 weeks since I arrived in England, half expecting not to really like being back, but I had loved it so far. August looked to be a busy and expensive month, though, so I was trying to focus on only spending time and money on the things that were worth it. I was leaving Sheffield this weekend and I was definitely going to miss it and had not had nearly enough time to see everyone.
I had cereal and a cup of tea for breakfast and carried on with work. I didn’t get much done though as, when Mom was up and about, the pressure was on to start the shredding. I could tell Mom was impatient to have me get it out of the way and it took a lot longer than she, or I, wanted it to. It felt very odd shredding any evidence of my existence and made me a bit nervous that I no longer would have any paperwork aside from birth, marriage and divorce proof plus some pension statements. I’d always kept at least 7 years of stuff, just in case, so it made me worry that I’d be asked to provide something that I’d shredded. Some people save birthday cards and all sorts of memorabilia and now I hardly existed.
For lunch I warmed up leftover sweet and sour chicken and added more veg to it and some cooked egg noodles – it was lovely. More shredding happened, and again after work, but I had a deadline of 5.30pm as we were all off out for my last night of favourites. My parents and I got to The Alma for 6pm to meet up with Chris and Amanda for an after work beer garden drink. I had the obligatory 3 pints of cider and we had a great night, but I refrained from wearing Amanda’s clothes as it was now sunny. The dogs came too and loved that the beer garden was busy. We did have to set an alarm to make sure we got to Tony’s chip shop on time as we were chatting on so much. This time, I got my hand in my pocket – it was the least I could do with Amanda and Chris treating us last week to drinks and my parents had splashed out on me quite a bit while I’d been in Mosborough. Fish, chips and peas for the 5 of us came to £43 and a round of drinks in The Alma had only been about £20. It had been amazing to spend time together, and lucky to do so more than once this trip. A definite highlight of my visit as I do love a local boozer and a chippy tea. That chippy tea, cooked perfectly by Rob, was spot on and I would definitely miss his fish & chips.

Sheffield – 30th & 31st July

Sheffield – 30th & 31st July

It was another busy day on Tuesday 30th July, I did a couple of hours work before breakfast of cereals and a cup of Yorkshire tea. I got the bus in to town to go meet another friend, Helen H. I’m not sure how long it’d been since I saw her but she hadn’t changed and still looked classy and very well. We’d chosen Lloyds, another Wetherspoons, and Helen had been lucky to find a seat in a shady spot – it was certainly too warm for a pashmina. I was desperate for a drink after walking from the bus station so went inside to grab a menu and help myself to the free iced water at the end of the bar – impressive. As it happened, it was Steak Tuesday today so I had steak with a jacket potato and Helen had a chicken salad. Even Helen was doing what Louisa had done and using the app on her phone to order food and drink. We both had a glass of wine and I was impressed that it had only cost me £11 for my meal and drink. I wasn’t expecting much from the meal but I was very impressed with how nicely cooked the steak was and how soft the inside of my potato was. We had a great catch up, reminiscing of all the ‘fun’ times when we worked together and all the laughs. After lunch, we said our farewells as I needed to sort something with my bank, which had been an ongoing saga and ultimate nightmare.

I had an old account I set up years ago that I’d been trying to close since Covid times when I found out they were charging me £13 a month for an unused account which had since got to almost £500 overdrawn. I did keep contacting them to sort it but, for various ridiculous reasons, it never got resolved and I got told it would have to be sorted out in person at the branch.
I was at the branch and a lovely lady there tried to help but couldn’t so put me on the phone to the head office call centre, the same place I had spoken to many times without successful resolution. I explained everything again and there was nothing the woman could do except to refer to her manager. At last it was being escalated and I expected a call back later this afternoon.
I left the bank, bumping in to my sister and April. April had just passed her driving theory test so was pleased and ready to go for her test. I had to dash as I was off to meet more friends for drinks at Kelham Island. I was going to walk it but then thought better of it and got the tram, unfortunately I shouldn’t have bothered as it wasn’t any quicker and they overcharged me. It was only £2.80 instead of £2.40 but it meant I had to have a purse full of coins because of changing a £20 note, when I’d only had £2.50 in change. I queried it but the conducted insisted he was right and I was wrong. Obviously, I found out much later on that I was right when I got charged £2.40 on the return journey.
As I approached the entrance to Kelham Island Tavern, my phone rang and it was the bank. The same woman I had spoken to less than 1 hour ago had called me back, profusely apologised it had come to this and explained her manager had agreed to remove all the charges up to 21st August 2021. This came to £450 approximately so meant I would need to put in £50. I wasn’t happy at having to do that, given £50 was put in in January 2023 and got eaten by fees and charges. Nevertheless I agreed just to get the bloody account back to zero so that I could close it. She advised I had to do it well before the end of August as the next £13 charge would be due again.
I was late so Linda had been waiting on her own for a while and I felt bad, Louisa was also late but arrived not long after with Charlie. I felt like one of those aunties who comments on how much kids had grown since last seeing them, but my gosh Charlie really had. He was a man now and looked like he worked out! We had a drink in the Kelham Island Tavern and celebrated him recently graduating with a first, while we waited for Kerrie to come down after work. It was good to catch up and our next stop was the Fat Cat. It was beer garden weather and we had a good laugh, before Kerrie had to leave. Our final pub was The Wellington, one of mine and Captain Caveman’s favourites. There was talk of us getting a takeaway at one point, but I was good and went home, getting in to town about 8.30pm. I should’ve got a day ticket as I’d ended up wasting £9.20 on bus and tram fares today but I’d not really known exactly how I was going to be travelling.
Back home, I was delighted to find that Ma had made a sweet and sour chicken and had saved me some. It was so tasty and just what I needed.

Wednesday 31st July was meant to be a productive day because I’d promised my Mom I would stay at home today to sort out the rest of my stuff from the loft. My first job though was to get weighed and measured. To my amazement, I was the same weight as last week despite having 383 syns. I’d lost 1cm from my bust and waist and 2cm from my hips. I have no idea how. I had beans on toast and a hot chocolate for breakfast then I did 5.5 hours work with a break in the middle. I managed to find my school certificates, pension documents, as well as birth, marriage and divorce documents. The tenants in Dalyan complained about the disappearing gardener again and I asked him to cut the bush as they were getting spiked coming in the gate. I was still fed up of our bloke but was even more cheesed off when he posted photos of a fab looking complex on his business page. I took a screenshot of it and sent it to him saying ‘why can’t you make our complex as nice as this is!!?’ He didn’t reply but he did get the bougainvillea bushes tended to. I didn’t have time for lunch but did eat some crisps and a Double Decker chocolate bar while sifting through paperwork to shred. For dinner my Mom made sausages with potatoes and vegetables and I really enjoyed it. We had some wine and then played Scrabble outside.
