Antalya & Belek – 11th October

Saturday 11th October was full on for our next day of hotel inspections on the Anex Fam trip. I was so glad that I wasn’t trying to do it with a hangover, which could easily have been the case with the amount of all inclusive drinks available last night.
We had a full day of hotel visits with Anex; including the Asteria, Kremlin Palace, Noa, and Selectum Family – focusing on both couples and family holidays. We had a good laugh, although my temporary disability prevented me from walking on the beach, so I checked out the food options (obviously)! I don’t eat seafood but if you do, there was plenty of options for that too.

Today’s hotels, I felt better suited the more discerning traveller and anyone with impaired vision or mobility issues would be well catered for here. There was only one instance where the lift decided to let us know we were too heavy and we all had a good old laugh – blaming the fab meals we’d all been enjoying. The Kremlin Palace certainly had far less UK guests and seemed to be more European and Turkish, however, I bumped in to a group of Scousers on a lads golf holiday and they were so impressed with the price of accommodation compared to the other hotels with more UK guests, that this was not their first time here.
I did so well at inspecting the food and drink choices that I nearly missed the bus after lunch and I had to quickly do a takeaway with what I still hadn’t finished! Luckily, I had help from my fellow diners who were on hand to get me plastic cups – there was no way I could leave the carrot cake, the brownie or the very generous pour of excellent red wine!
The hotels we inspected were ideal for fans of an all inclusive that was of superior quality! As I was a slow walker I did find myself at the back most of the time but that was ok and I always had company.
Back at the hotel it was time to get ready for another treat from Anex and this time I was wearing a black dress!

Debby and I got ready in our boudoir style room at the Selectum Luxury Resort hotel. We decided to both wear our black dresses although I was disappointed I still had to wear my white sandals for my broken foot. Tonight, Anex were putting on a lavish gala evening with food, free flowing drinks and more breathtaking entertainment. Debby and I were of the first to arrive and we didn’t know there was a lift. The member of staff told us to use the stairs and I did manage them but for anyone with bad eyesight and mobility issues it would be better to insist on the lift – which happened to be there but we just didn’t see it. There was a very fancy bar with different cocktails available, some with dry ice surrounding them as a special effect. A photographer took everyone’s photo as they entered the event and we got to have a go on a 360° turning podium for another photo – perhaps not the best thing to do when on crutches, but I managed it. My gin cocktail was a little strong so I decided to try the whisky one, which was much better.

We made our way from the Diamond Hall, in to the dining/event room which was decorated so well and we really were in for a treat of a night. I managed to get sat at a table which included Debby, Suzi, and Adam and included an ample portion of vegetarians. The food was fantastic, I don’t eat fish so I skipped that course but the chicken parcel and the beef main dish were very good. I even had a bite of the vegetarian option, which was similar to the chicken parcel but just with vegetables and was tasty. I ended up having 2 of the beef, as did Adam – just to help out the vegetarians. I drank fizz all night and even spotted the waitress, Meyve, from last night’s party who was super helpful. This meant that I kept getting refills without asking, which was nice!
A lady got something in her eye and needed urgent attention so I took her to my room for eye drops before the dessert. When I got back to the table, I had what looked like a tomato waiting for me and it was very strange. It was actually mango and passion fruit parfait which looked like a tomato in soil and it didn’t half mess with my head!
We had a dance group, musicians, acrobats, singers and a speech from the Anex boss, Andrew. I felt we had been treated like royalty and I was definitely looking forward to being able to add the Anex selection of hotels and package holidays to my Resort Experts repertoire. A few people went up to the bar after the gala dinner but I was already flagging and needed rest before our last hotel inspecting day tomorrow. Jamie was happy to take advantage of the all inclusive drinks and insisted on us going ‘for one’. While the others knocked the drinks back and got to know more about each other, I made my drinks last. It was a great night but on a visit to the loo, I simply sneakily went back to my room as it was already after midnight and I needed my bed.

Antalya & Belek – 10th October

We had the morning to ourselves on Friday 10th October, the first official day of the Anex Fam Trip. While my room mate, Debby, slept I made my way down to breakfast. The breakfast buffet and cooking stations at the Selectum Luxury Resort hotel were very impressive and it was difficult to choose what to have. The waitress brought me Turkish tea and orange juice but everything else you just went up and got it yourself.
When Debby woke up I introduced myself and I felt like I was very lucky to have a nice room mate. We got on the bus to go to our first hotel inspections of the trip. This afternoon we were visiting the Land of Legends hotels and the theme park. We got split in to 2 bus loads and we looked at the hotels. Our group started with the Land of Legends Kingdom hotel which is 5 Star and absolutely fantastic for families. Of course Jamie had to test out the kids club facilities just to make sure it was up to scratch and I decided I would do the bed and bathroom testing. As I was crutching about I found it tricky to make notes but a couple of the other travel agents offered to help me get about and share their notes.

We visited the hotel bedrooms, which were amazing and we even saw the dining places which were not just tailored for children. The Nickelodeon hotel, again 5 Star, was very impressive too and as I waited for the lift I asked a couple of children what they thought of it. They never wanted to leave and looked to be having an amazing time. There was a sweetie area where anyone could help themselves to a few treats – a great idea. Both the hotels had comfy beds, great themed rooms and gave free access to the Land of Legends Theme park where all the rides and swimming pools are located.

After the tours and a walk around the massive shopping precinct, we were given a bit of time to go and enjoy the theme park for ourselves. I didn’t take my swimmers but some people did and I wandered around by myself, slowly. There was a system in place where you can top up a wrist band with money from your bank card to enable you to buy beers, food and souvenirs. I didn’t partake in this as I’d taken water from the hotel with me. I met up with more travel agents and got friendly with Suzi and Louise, who were more my pace. Suzi and I bonded while getting a bit lost in the theme park – which is easily done. After 2.5 hours of wandering around it, I still had only seen half of it!

On the first evening, all together at Selectum Luxury Resort we were treated to an amazing Bohemian themed evening by Anex Tour UK.
The food was absolutely superb and my dining partner, Shahid, was able to help me snaffle down so many courses. The beef melted in the mouth, the prawns were great and there was just so much food. Cocktails flowed for those who wanted them but I stuck to the champagne! I was not missing out on the excellent food that just kept on coming out. As a temporary disabled person, I was worried about getting sat on the floor and getting back up but there were plenty of helpers around, should I have needed them. Shahid turned out to be a great dining partner, as he was also a food lover.

Dancers, saxophonists, fire and light shows followed but I didn’t miss my dessert. It was a really lovely pud but I was the only one who had one as the others had gone off to the bar and to watch the evening entertainment.

I managed a little dance with Fulya Çelik, the Anex Turkish contact, before sneaking back to my room for a camomile tea and a piece of fruit before bed.

Dalyan to Antalya – 9th October

I was packed and ready by 10.30am on Thursday 9th October when Jamie came to pick me up. Although the Anex Fam trip included flights from Manchester or Gatwick, Jamie and I had arranged to meet everyone in Antalya. Jamie had kindly offered to drive so we could take any luggage we wanted and I had thrown in a few dresses for the fancier evenings. We were given 4 nights accommodation at the 5 Star All Inclusive Selectum Luxury Resort in Belek. On the drive there, we had the Resort Experts team meeting which we did on the move.
When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by staff who drove Jamie’s car to the car park, took our bags and told us to be seated at the check in desk. We were given a welcome drink and told who we would be sharing a room with. Jamie was going to share with Shahid and I got a lady called Debby. All of the other Travel Agents and Anex Tour UK staff were arriving after midnight so Jamie and I went to our respective rooms and unpacked before meeting back up in the 24/7 cafe bar. On entering my room, I was struck by the red and black decor which reminded me of a bit of a tart’s parlour. I chose the bed nearest the window as I preferred not to sleep in the bed next to a massive mirror. The bathroom had all the toiletries, a separate shower and bath but no door. Just some beaded tassels on the edge of where a door would ordinarily be. There was also a well stocked fridge that took some working out how to get in. Jamie described his room as sexy, and his was not red & black. It certainly wasn’t a hotel room I would recommend for just anyone and was definitely designed for a more romantic trip away – think Moulin Rouge!
We shared a Turkish spring roll and ordered pizzas at the 24/7 cafe bar. Jamie had a beer and I chose a red wine while admiring the sea view. My mushroom pizza was good and Jamie enjoyed his chicken caeser salad one.

Our next venture was to check out the pool, the spa, the gym and the beach. There is a pier where you can pay a little extra to hire a sunbed area which has direct access, via a ladder, in to the sea. It comes with your own bar staff between 10am and 6pm – ideal for those people who really like to rinse the benefits of the All Inclusive. I took it upon myself to feet out the sunbeds, which came in single and double
Jamie and I decided to have a little rest before dinner and I rested my foot. I was finding it easy enough to get about with my crutch at the Selectum but it was just so big and I was very slow.

When we got back to our rooms, there had been a delivery of a bottle of red wine and a bowl of fruit with a message from guest relations – how lovely. I made myself a herbal tea and decided to have a bath. Unfortunately the bath plug didn’t work so I had a shower instead. There’s nothing nicer than popping on a fluffy robe in a hotel after a hot shower.
Jamie and I met back up and had a good look at the restaurant, it had such a vast selection of food to help ourselves to and we then retired to the bar area. We decided we would try to stay up for the Manchester flight which was due to have some Travel Agents arrive by 1.30am. I was still taking it relatively steady, despite the all inclusive alcohol, as I didn’t want to fall over. The hotel decor was quite dark and even the toilets were black and red. I remember thinking it wouldn’t be an ideal hotel for anyone with poor eyesight, like my dad. On a trip to the loo, Jamie returned with a goody bag from Fulya, the lady from Anex Antalya, who was organising the trip. Inside we had a handmade pot, an eye mask, a notebook and pen and a really great hooded top. Jamie and I put the tops on and were really impressed. Fulya came over to join us, to stay up for the Manchester contingent.
The Manchester lot arrived and we went to greet them at the 24/7 cafe bar. I ordered some baclava and a tea while most people were ordering alcohol but I’d had enough. I introduced myself to a man who said he didn’t drink alcohol and so he joined me with the baclava and tea. It would turn out that this fella was going to be Jamie’s room mate, Shahid!
The Gatwick Travel Agents were due to arrive around 3.45am but I decided I could not stay up for that, even though Debby my room mate was one of them. I left Jamie with the Manchester crowd and went to bed. I kept a light on so that Debby could find her way about and went to bed – I never heard Debby arrive.

Dalyan – 8th October

It was my last day of doggy day care with Norman on Wednesday 8th October – Jamie & Drew were due back later today. It was still rainy and Norman was a bit cheesed off. After his breakfast, Norman helped me eat my toast which I had with a tea. It was also weigh day and Carol had offered to pick me up later for Fat Club. I did get weighed at home to find I had put on 0.85kg (1.9lb). My measurements weren’t that good either as I had put 1cm on both hips and bust but lost 1cm from my waist.
I worked all morning as well as making some progress on my side project. I was designing a handy travel planner to help people plan for their holidays. I was doing a course with Claire Clarke and needed to have put some ideas on Pinterest on an online board. I felt that that was a waste of time and I really didn’t get on with Pinterest at all. It reminded me of a virtual scrap book for people with far too much time on their hands. However, as I was trying to persevere with the Optimistic October, I did it. I had soup for lunch then got ready for saying bye to Norman.
Jamie & Drew arrived back after a lovely holiday in Kos and then Carol arrived to pick me up to face her dreaded scales. Surprisingly, I had only put on 0.55kg (1.2lb) on Carol’s scales but it was still too much and I needed to get back to losing the weight. I now had 5.3kg (almost 12lb) to lose again to be back at my target weight.
Carol dropped me back home after Fat Club for a Zoom Q & A call with Claire Clarke and the Create Publish Grow group, which went well. I put my Resort Experts out of office on and packed for my trip to Antalya tomorrow. The Anex Fam trip was finally here and I was really looking forward to it. My temporary injury concerned me a little as I hoped I would be able to keep up with everyone and not be a burden slowy at the back! I forgot to have dinner so I just ate some cheese and walnuts before bed.

Dalyan – 6th & 7th October

Monday 6th October was back to the grindstone for me, while Norman snored through most of the day. He woke up for a drink and a wee but was having a lazy Monday. I dealt with a tricky change to a client’s booking which resulted in a further booking which was good.
It was definitely getting colder as I found out at dinner time; my meal from the freezer was not defrosted yet. After walking Norman I decided to order a takeaway delivery and had half of my favourite 2 dishes from Simple. The beef noodles and the crispy chicken with chips are really good and I really enjoyed them.
I spoke to Captain Caveman who seemed out of sorts and was preoccupied with work stuff because he was so busy.

Tuesday 7th October was a wet day and Norman, the dog, was less than impressed. He looked like he was auditioning for a role as a shepherd in a nativity play for most of the morning. I didn’t even get my breakfast until gone 10am but I had both toast and fruit with quark.
I booked my parents their hotel to join Mark & Kate for Kate’s 64th Birthday at Jiva beach next month. They’d decided to join the all inclusive birthday bash in Fethiye with some of the other Dalyan Dwellers. Ali popped round for a cup of tea and a chat, despite the rain, and Norman was pleased to have another visitor. Her and her husband were also going to Jiva beach and they were looking forward to it too.
I had leftover takeaway for dinner and finished off with a glass of red wine and some cheese before bed.

Dalyan – 5th October

I had set my alarm to check on Norman, the dog, at 7.30am on Sunday 5th October. I was a bit bleary-eyed and felt hungover, my stomach wasn’t great either. Norman was still snoring away and didn’t wake up until after the kettle had boiled.
I did a video to a friend who’s birthday it was and then Norman did a video to Jamie & Drew (aka Little Daddy & Step Daddy Drew) to let him know he was fine, despite last night’s partying. They think I’m crackers with the videos but Norman likes them and Edna used to love them, so I’ve continued them. We spent the rest of the morning drinking water and sage tea, laying on the sofa feeling a bit delicate. Norman got lots of snuggles and snored too much for me to have a nap. Nanny Kay popped over and we had a natter but no tea as she had already had 2 cups. She kindly gave me a lift when she left too to save me walking back home. I bought some treats at the shop for The Aussies to take with them on their journey tomorrow, including some vampire teeth with it being Halloween month.
We met in the street, all on our way to Ayaz. We all agreed it was one of our new favourites for Turkish food at a reasonable price. The food was excellent; I had the chicken shish, Amanda the chicken wings and Greg ordered lamb shish. They brought dips too, which were lovely. Amanda and I had the fresh pomegranate juice and Greg a Coke. We were the only ones in there so we got great service and large portions, I’d intended taking half home but I finished it all and was stuffed. The temptation to have the künefe was too much, as I’d not had one for at least a year. Greg and I shared it and I enjoyed it. For those who’ve not tried it, it’s like shredded wheat with melty cheese and honey. It was definitely not Slimming World friendly!
The Aussies treated me to the meal, which was very kind and I was sad to see them leave, especially when I knew they were returning to stressful jobs back in Australia. They walked me back and they even came to say bye to Norman, who really appreciated it and tried to do loving leg licks to show it.
By 9.30pm both Norman and I were no stranger to naps on the sofa after a lovely weekend. I had 3 more days left with Norman before the work trip with Jamie to Antalya – which I was really looking forward to.

Dalyan – 4th October

Saturday 4th October was not only market day in Dalyan but it was my first day without medication. It would turn out to be quite a frustrating morning but a rather lovely afternoon.
Debbie had already offered to get me some fruit and veg from the market. I’d declined her kind offer because my parents had said they were going and that we could go together. Ma agreed to give me cash in exchange for me doing a bank transfer which meant I only had to walk to the market and back. Unfortunately, I’d misunderstood about going to the market together as my parents prefer to walk to the market on a certain route and I didn’t want to walk to their’s and then through the side streets when it was easier and quicker for me to go down the main road. I thought I’d meet them there, get the money, share their shopping trolley for anything heavy and all walk back together. That didn’t happen. I got to the market fine, a bit in pain and frustrated at how slow I was. This meant my parents had almost finished their shopping and wanted to get off. I got the money from Mom and we bought some strawberries together before Dad needed to go to the loo. I’m so like my Dad in that regard as I also had wondered if I would make it there and back without a loo break. They weren’t walking back my way as they were going in to town to the supermarket so I couldn’t walk that distance yet.
I decided not to buy much else as I hadn’t even brought a suitable bag to carry the shopping back in. It was hard work walking back and the bag straps were cutting in to my shoulders. I managed to get over half way when Ali, came past on her mobility scooter and asked if I wanted a lift. I have never been so grateful for the offer of a lift.
She dropped me off just a few minutes later and she said she’d pop in next week for a cuppa and a chat. She also said to ask her to get me anything rather than struggling to get it myself. I was still pleased that I had managed it without the painkillers and I at least had something to offer my guests later. I had bought cheese, olives, butter, bananas, mushrooms and strawberries and I can’t recall how much I spent aside from the strawberries being 300 lira (£5.50). Luckily the off licence does free delivery so I could order that later.
After getting in, I was exhausted.
At midday Penny popped in for a cup of tea and brought some cakes, which were very good but a bit naughty, and some fresh bread. I took Norman out early so that he didn’t miss a walk once my next guests arrived. Captain Caveman called and we decided I would book my flights to see him at Christmas. I chose a return flight and added 15kg luggage. We also decided that, as we weren’t going to Vietnam for Christmas and New Year, we would look for a January holiday somewhere warm instead.
When The Aussies arrived I was out on the terrace waiting for them and I’d already ordered the following delivery from Yaman Büfe;

I got out a few nibbles and we sat outside all evening. I had some wine with lots of soda as it was my first alcoholic drink in a month and I didn’t want to feel hungover tomorrow. My guests were on the gin and also brought some treats. We had a good laugh and Norman was glad of the company. Amanda and Greg didn’t leave until 2am and I think we had covered discussions on most topics – I even discovered Greg can do an excellent donkey impression. This was meant to have been our last goodbye but we agreed to a late lunch tomorrow afternoon.

Dalyan – 2nd & 3rd October

I worked all day at the dining room table on Thursday 2nd October. There was a Resort Experts team meeting and I also received a delivery for Jamie. Captain Caveman got in touch to say we would no longer be going to Vietnam for Christmas as he had been offered work in the UK over the Christmas period. I didn’t mind so much as I couldn’t justify the cost of the flight and didn’t really want Captain Caveman to have to pay for me. It was also cold in December and January where we wanted to visit. He was going to go in March instead, but I was already booked for dog sitting until the 31st March. Captain Caveman suggested I could fly out to join him in Vietnam for Easter instead, so there was still a possibility that I would get back there. It was disappointing but made sense and it wasn’t really my decision to make. We don’t celebrate Christmas as such so it made no difference to me. Captain Caveman suggested that I might be able to come over to London to see him, rather than stay in Dalyan on my own. The flights from Dalaman to the UK in winter, only fly on Tuesdays and Saturdays so we said we would have a think about it. It meant that our 14 year anniversary would probably be spent apart too. Captain Caveman also said he would take a look at coming to Dalyan at the end of November if he could.
I made a leek and potato soup and it looked like a storm was due so I walked Norman early. I saw my parents at their gate – they had not gone to Göcek today, after all, and had just been at home chilling. They were off out with their friends so they had to rush off to get ready and I said I might see them at the weekend. I let Ma know the storm would start just after midnight and returned back to Jamie’s to feed Norman. Norman and I had a cosy night in, and I enjoyed my homemade soup with fresh bread that I had managed to fetch for myself. It got quite chilly and as the storm loomed. I knew I wouldn’t be able to move the sunbeds and mattresses because of my bad leg but I decided to move the cushions. I had to carry them one by one due to using the crutch and hobbling so it took me 25 mins. It felt like a massive achievement, though. I closed the windows, moved the loose stuff in the outdoor areas and got ready for the bad weather to come. I even had to put a duvet on as I was very cold when I went to bed.

The storm started about 1am on Friday 3rd October but luckily Norman, the dog, slept through until 7.15am when I woke him up. Jamie had told me he won’t go out in the rain but off he trotted for a pee, getting absolutely soaked. After drying Norman off and feeding him, we got ready to stay indoors today. I moved the farewell drinks with the Aussies to tomorrow as it looked like nobody in Dalyan was going anywhere in this weather today.
I pre-recorded a message for a friend I was due to have a call with today as the power kept cutting out and I didn’t want to not be able to speak to her.
Norman got a dry, a brush, a few spritzes of doggy cologne and lots of attention in-between work stuff.
I had more homemade leek and potato soup for lunch then a chickpea curry with a wrap, for dinner. It was another evening on the sofa as the rain continued all day and in to the night – we couldn’t even go for a walk. It was now a month since I broke my 4th & 5th metatarsals and I was still on the painkillers which prohibited me from drinking alcohol. I took the last tablet this evening and wondered if the pain would be bearable tomorrow without them. Oddly, I’d not really missed the drinking alcohol and with the state of the uneven paths and roads in Dalyan had not wanted to be trying to walk a bit fiddly anyway. I got some excellent news before bedtime; Captain Caveman booked his flights and was coming to Dalyan in 7 weeks time. It will have meant we hadn’t seen each other for about 11 weeks!

Dalyan – 1st October

October was going to be eventful! I was awake before 7am on Wednesday 1st October and it would turn out to be a busy day. Before I even got out of bed, I had set the budget for the month at £1,000 and, now that Captain Caveman was no longer coming to visit me in October, I planned to work as much as possible on Resort Experts, my handy travel planner and the next handy travel tips book. This would mean I could turn down anything that was not aligned to my goals and my budget and concentrate on what needed to be done. I checked the data on my JOLOYOLO blog to find that it had less visitors and views last month, than in August. Vietnam readers were not in the Top 10 (again), the Top 3 countries were the UK, Turkey and Spain. I sat out on the terrace with a big mug of tea and started planning my week of looking after Norman. I also needed to get my broken foot to a point where I could walk properly again. It was weigh day, so I got weighed to find I had put on 0.25kg (0.6lb). Not great, but my measurements were more favourable; bust -2cm, waist no change, hips -3cm. I wasn’t able to walk to Fat Club today and I had too much going on with work to go, anyway.
Midmorning, I decided I would walk to the nearest shops to get some provisions. It took me about 25 minutes to get there and here is what I bought, with prices in lira;

I was conscious that I couldn’t carry any tins, bottles or anything too heavy so I kept it to small or light items. When I got back, it had took me around 1 hour to walk the 300m and back! I still had quite a bit of improvement to make on the walking.

After eating an early lunch of an açma and a banana I worked and also started to look at holidays for Captain Caveman and I. I started a Facebook thing with a couple of colleagues, where we shared Optimistic October prompts. Today’s was to write down 3 things I was looking forward to in October. Mine were going to Antalya on a work trip, getting my handy travel planner a bit nearer to being completed and getting more content written for my next handy travel tips book.
I finally got little Norman out for a walk but we only made it as far as my parents gate and back. We didn’t go in, as they were out with friends on the yellow boat today, tomorrow they were off to Göcek. I’d asked them over for a farewell drink with the Aussies at the weekend but they weren’t able to join us as they had already been invited out with their friends for dinner and drinks on both Friday & Saturday. For dinner I warmed up a chicken dinner and then watched Netflix with Norman, before bed.

Dalyan – 28th to 30th September

I’d not seen The Aussies for a while so we arranged to have breakfast together on Sunday 28th September. I’d already checked that nearby Okyanus did a Turkish breakfast and they did, so I booked us in for 9.30am. We each had the Turkish breakfast with Turkish tea and extra pomegranate juice and it was so lovely. The total for the 3 of us came to 1,940 lira (£35.27) and we didn’t leave until gone 2pm. I was meant to have been spending time today on the book and planner content but I didn’t get the chance. I went home briefly and then set off for my next meeting with a friend at Books & Cookies. She’d just had another grandchild so was keen to update me and had plans to visit the baby in England. I had 2 cookies and a hibiscus tea plus a herbal tea for a total of 445 lira (£8.09). I had to dash back for a video call with Captain Caveman. He wasn’t impressed at how expensive the flights to Dalyan were in October so he suggested we delay his visit. Of course, I was disappointed but there was nothing I could do and neither of us were willing to pay over the odds for flights.
That evening, I caught up on emails and then had some leftover food from Simple which tasted just as good being reheated.

Rain was forecast on Monday 29th September and it was no surprise to me, as I was due to look after Norman, the dog, from tomorrow.
I had my first go at using something called a Trello board, an online whiteboard that can be shared for workflow and project tasks. I was using it for the handy travel planner I was working on – something to help anyone plan for, and have, a better holiday. I was also finding out quickly that I wasn’t a fan of Pinterest, at all.
There was also an early birthday celebration get together for Drew at Ela’s Kitchen. I’d asked one of the girls for a lift and hobbled down to Lukka bar to meet her but she’d forgotten. I couldn’t really justify getting a taxi there and it would take me too long to walk.

I decided to have my favourite meal at Ela’s, the full English breakfast, and a large bottle of water. My food was excellent, and Nanny Kay’s lasagne looked very good too. Natalie made probably the best carrot cake I’ve ever had, for the birthday cake and we all sang Happy Birthday.
I paid 600 lira (£10.91) and got a lift back with Nanny Kay as it was raining. On the way back Nanny Kay and I arranged that she would come visit Norman and I later in the week, while Jamie and Drew were on holiday.

On Tuesday 30th September Norman was pleased to see me and wasn’t unduly bothered that Little Daddy (Jamie) and Step Daddy Drew were off on their holidays. For lunch I warmed up a chickpea and spinach curry.
At 6pm, I was trying my best to get Norman to go out for a walk – he wouldn’t and went back to door to be let back indoors.
For dinner I made a mushroom pasta and then did some content writing. I also totted up my September budget, which had not gone well. I’d received a refund from the Yücelen of 3500 lira (£63.64) because they had decided I had overpaid. This meant that the entire amount that I had paid out, including 3 consultations, 3 x-rays, the translator services, 3 prescriptions and a compression bandage had come to just under £85. Despite having an unrealistic budget of £1000 for this month, I had managed to spend £1,890. Even though Captain Caveman had transferred some funds, I’d also had to take another £106 from next month’s budget, already. We had enjoyed Captain Caveman being on holiday for a week and the costs of a broken foot for that, though. October was going to be a tight month but I was ready for the challenge.

Dalyan – 25th to 27th September

Thursday 25th September was mainly a ‘getting stuff done’ kind of a day, given that I had taken a day off yesterday – the first one in a while. I was meant to be joining my parents tonight to go on a boat to Kingfisher restaurant but we had decided to wait until I could walk a bit better. Unfortunately, my favourite pen ran out so I messaged my Mom to ask her to get me a couple more if she was passing the stationers. I also needed some medication from the pharmacy so she said she would be able to do that, which was good of her.
We had the Resort Experts team meeting where we discussed that Classic Collection were ceasing taking on any new bookings, which we were all shocked about. I had clients booked with them so it was reassuring to know that all would be fine for any holidays booked for the next year, and would run as booked.
In the evening, I had a video call with a Sheffield friend where we talked about lots of different topics, including that her and her husband would be back in Dalyan at the end of next month. What I couldn’t talk about was that her hubby was booking her a holiday as a surprise for her birthday next year and I had to keep it quiet – that was tricky! I also had a video call with Captain Caveman who was sat outside the Sun Inn, in Barnes, freezing his bits off.

On Friday 26th September I was busy with work stuff as it was a lot of people’s pay day weekends. I had enquiries to do and I was hoping to get finished in time for a soirée I had been invited to that evening. I had more pasta bolognese for a late lunch as I was running out of time.
In the afternoon, I surprised a few of my colleagues, at Resort Experts, when I confirmed the ideal holiday for my friends. When I’d started this enquiry 37 days ago, I’d asked in the group chat for any help or advice from other Resort Experts who had more knowledge than me on USA, Canada and cruises – as these were areas I had the least knowledge in – I’d only been to New York once about 20 years ago! At the time I had replies saying that what the client wanted to do was impossible for the budget they had set. I called on friends outside of Resort Experts to help me, as well as an amazing lady at Travelpack. Over the last month, I’d contacted Norwegian Cruise Lines directly and I did endless training webinars and read up on all that I needed to know. So today, when we had confirmed the perfect holiday for the client and under the budget I was proud of myself.
I sent all the confirmation to the joint email adress as instructed by the husband booking it, then waited for his wife, my friend, to see the surprise. It took a while but when she did, we all had a video call and it was honestly the best feeling to have sorted out her birthday trip which included a 12 day cruise. She was so happy and I was relieved it exceeded her expectations.
After the call, I went over to Jamie and Drew’s where they were having a BBQ. I arrived with a bottle of Prosecco just in time for food and to find the party in full swing. I had a glass of Prosecco which got knocked over in to my chicken & salad and on to Nanny Kay’s crotch. We played loads of silly games and had a good laugh. After a couple more drinks, I ended up leaving just after Nanny Kay. It was about to get messy as I heard 3 people jump in the pool around 11.30pm. I’d taken no photos as my phone was almost dead.

Ma & Pa were off to the market on Saturday 27th September and had asked me if they could get me something. As they were coming to bring me some other stuff, I accepted their kind offer and they brought me nectarines, bananas and grapes. Mom wouldn’t take any money for the fruit so I wasn’t sure about the prices. But here’s what else they picked me up, with prices in lira;

I was shocked at the price the butter had gone up to and decided I would have to use it very sparingly. My parents didn’t stay long as they wanted to get back and rest up, ready for a trip to Ölüdeniz with friends tomorrow.
I ordered some water which came immediately and cost 100 lira (£1.82) for 19 litres.
That evening, I couldn’t be bothered to cook and I hadn’t remembered to get anything out of the freezer. I decided to treat myself to a takeaway, a first in a very long time. I contacted Onur at Simple and ordered beef noodles and a crispy chicken with fries. I decided I would eat half of each and save the rest for tomorrow. It cost 800 lira (£14.55) for the 2 dishes, including free delivery and was absolutely delicious.

Dalyan & Ekincik – 23rd & 24th September

After the excitement of yesterday and knowing there was an outing planned tomorrow, Tuesday 23rd September was a day spent at my desk. I had lots of bits and bobs today so I worked down the to do list and ate nice food.

In the evening Captain Caveman and I both looked for flights for him to come to Dalyan but they were looking quite expensive for the dates he needed. We were still planning on flying to Vietnam for Christmas and Captain Caveman had seen some flights from the UK.

I took the day off on Wednesday 24th September as Jamie had invited me on another boat trip. He had friends over on holiday and there had been a spare place for me.
Before that, I got on the home scales with it being weigh day. I had put on 0.95kg (2lb) which was hardly surprising. On my measurements, my bust had increased by 1cm, my hips had remained the same and my waist had lost 3cm.
Of course, I was about to potentially make it worse by going out for the day.
Jamie & Drew had organised another day out with Captain Ünal on Duran Duran boat to Ekincik Bay. We did the usual boat trip which never gets boring and everyone had a fantastic day. It was quite choppy in parts so I plonked myself in the shade at the back of the boat while most of the others were up the front or on the roof making the most of the sunny weather. Mick, Nick’s Dad, kept me entertained with his hilarious Sheffield banter and we had some delicious food. Nick played mother and got me my plate of food which was really lovely, as always.

I didn’t do any swimming as my foot was hurting so I just chilled out. On the way back I had to have a second sea sickness tablet and also gave a couple out to others who were feeling a bit iffy. We stopped at Little Dalyan for fruit and cake while seeing some turtles. By the time I got back, I was super tired and drowsy but everyone was going to Lukka bar so I did too. Instead of alcohol, which I’d had none of for 3 weeks now, I ordered one of their excellent milkshakes. Everyone carried on their night and I was told later most ended up in Sofra bar. I needed my bed as I was exhausted.
I’d spent a total of £45 today and had a very lovely day – I wouldn’t need any dinner and I ended up falling asleep on the sofa.

Dalyan & Ortaca – 22nd September

I had an appointment for my next hospital check up at 9.30am on Monday 22nd September. Ian and Janet had very kindly offered to take me, so I was up early having tea and toast before leaving at 8.45am. There were updates that the fires in the area had now been put out, which was great news.
It had been less than 3 weeks since I broke my 4th and 5th metatarsals in my foot and I was optimistically hoping to be given the all clear today. Once at the Yücelen hospital, Janet insisted on pushing me in a wheelchair. Not surprisingly, this made the whole visit so much more efficient, and less painful. Umut the translator was back, the orthopaedic doctor was pleased to see me and I was whizzed back and forth to the payment desk and x-ray room. As I had already used 80% of my 5,000 lira (£91) limit, under my outpatient provision on my health insurance, I was fully prepared to pay for my consultation, x-ray and any other costs. I’d already researched this and the girl at the desk said she would ask about getting me a discount as it was related to the same issue. While they sorted the bill, I went with Umut to the x-ray room where he took photos of my latest (and third) x-ray. When the doctor had me back in, he was very pleased and said it was healing well and I could now start to go swimming but I still needed to be careful and not walk without the crutch for perhaps another few weeks. I asked if I would now be allowed to fly and they did indeed say they could provide a fit to fly letter, should I need one. I could tell that the orthopaedic doctor wasn’t a fan of my Vietnamese porter sandals and he suggested that it might be a good idea to wear more supportive shoes. He also said to the translator that he had never had such a happy and positive patient. That made me laugh as I’d certainly not been feeling that way lately – maybe it was the painkillers which he offered me more of! I shook his hand and thanked him for all his help, I also said I would keep in touch with Umut via his Instagram so that I could follow his Japan adventure. I paid the bill of 4,375 lira (£80) not knowing at the time that I would end up being reimbursed for a chunk of it. As I’d not been able to drink any alcohol while on the medication, I had decided I would put 200 lira (£3.64) in to a glass for every day without having had any booze. That was easily what I might have ordinarily spent on drinks on average and I now had 3,800 lira (£69) saved up. Umut wheeled me back to the entrance where Ian & Janet were patiently waiting, then we left to go for a breakfast in Ortaca. At Cetem, a lovely cafe not too far from the hospital, we all had at least 1 Turkish tea, Ian ordered the menemen, Janet had pancakes and I went for the Turkish breakfast – well, I don’t get out much these days. I really enjoyed the food as well as the company and we did have a good laugh. Our waitress was really sweet and kept checking everything was ok while trying to clear the plates before we finished (not uncommon in Turkey). The bill came to just 1,200 lira (£21.82) and we were all stuffed. Janet and Ian nearly didn’t let me pay for breakfast and I had to put up a bit of a fight. Their kindness didn’t stop there, though, as Janet had got some new sandals which I’d been admiring so they even drove me to the same shop so that I could try on and buy a pair. They were Lumberjack velcro sandals which made me look like a fully fledged ramp user but, as soon as I put them on, they felt like I was walking (limping) on air. I was sold and, although I probably could’ve got them cheaper online, I was more than happy with the service of the sales assistant who made sure they fit properly and the fact that I had them straight away. I thought they were worth every lira at 1,900 lira (£34.55) and I was so pleased that Janet had recommended them to me as I would not have considered them otherwise. I must admit, I’d even tried on a pair of crocks (in desperation) but they weren’t comfortable for my foot.
We drove back to Dalyan and Ian dropped me right outside the door, Janet helped me to get inside the apartment with my new purchase and I was safely back home by 1pm. I felt a lot better knowing that my foot was healing and that I could potentially start to swim. I had some water then put my new sandals on in the house so that I could practice walking about in them. The bad foot fastened to about half way with the support bandage on which meant it was much more comfortable. I didn’t need any lunch and I did lots more cruise training in the afternoon. I was really fancying a Nile cruise in January 2027, now that I was learning all about the different types. At 8pm, Captain Caveman called me from London to have a video call. He was pleased that I’d had such a lovely morning with Janet & Ian and relieved I was getting better. At 8.30pm I warmed up more bolognese to go with pasta for dinner and then had an early night.

Dalyan – 20th & 21st September

I woke up with my foot throbbing and itching at 7.15am on Saturday 20th September. The skies outside were still a little smoggy and the nearby fires were still ongoing. There were some posts on Facebook about local charities sharing, or not sharing, money donated from a recent event which involved some friends. I decided to leave all of the Facebook groups this related to as it was getting silly. I also did a sweep of any other Facebook groups or pages I followed that I no longer had time to follow and removed myself.
I had a cup of Yorkshire tea and some cheese spread on toast for breakfast then did a little bit of work and caught up on my blog posts.
Debbie very kindly went to the Saturday market for me again this week and here’s what she bought for less than 200 lira (£3.64), which I was delighted with;

The lettuce alone was 50 lira (91p) which Debbie was unnecessarily apologetic about, given that they were cheaper last week. She also gave me more fresh figs, some black grapes and plums from her own stash. We had a drink and a chat, which was nice.
Later, Ma & Pa called in with some quark and bread for me from the shop. They didn’t stay long as they were off out with friends on a Dalyan night out. I warmed up some pasta Bolognese for dinner and spoke briefly to Captain Caveman who was working on site this weekend in North Wales.

On Sunday 21st September I rested up mostly and caught up with some writing – I was quite behind. I treated myself to a bacon sandwich with the last packet of bacon from the freezer and the loaf my parents had brought yesterday.
I contemplated inviting my parents over for a meal but they were having a rest day as it had been a late one last night. Meanwhile, I was feeling the benefits of not having had any alcohol for 16 days with several more to go. Captain Caveman was in Newark meeting up with some friends for a Sunday lunch.
I reheated a roast chicken meal for my Sunday dinner and even treated myself to some gravy. I tried to have an early night, as I was up early for another hospital visit tomorrow morning, but I couldn’t sleep because of my foot pain and I had already taken the maximum amount of pain relief.

Dalyan – 19th September

Dalyan woke up to a smoke filled sky on Friday 19th September, when the forests in nearby Köyceğiz had caught fire and people were desperately trying to put it out and stop it spreading. Friends in Okçular were affected by more local forest fires which were also out of control. I’d barely started work, when Dad arrived with a cooler box and a carrier bag of food. Mom had messaged to say she was sending him over, regardless of the air quality, with the contents of her fridge freezer, to store in mine, as the new one was coming later today. I was glad he was there as I was just pondering how I was going to take the bin out to the end of the road – I didn’t think I could get down the stairs with the bin bag in my hand and a crutch. If I fell, no one would know I had, until potentially market day!
Dad stayed for a cup of tea and a chat but then had to rush off, when Mom messaged to say the new bed delivery had turned up and he should come home. I found him a mask to put on so that he wouldn’t inhale the smoke, which was quite bad. It all got a bit rushed and confusing as Dad took the cooler box back, I’m not sure why but he said Mom had said to. I managed to get down the stairs with the bin and a crutch but had to ask Dad to take it down the 2 bottom steps with no hand rail. I carried it out of the complex and along the road but the usual bin was overflowing so I had to walk a bit further with Dad to the next bin. We said farewell and off Dad went, not wearing the mask, with his empty box, which he thought had something in.
I rushed back hoping to grab a drink or breakfast before it was time for some training I had signed up for, on cruises. This was good timing as, in the afternoon, I had a call with a new customer who was interested in organising a cruise and stay holiday. A woman on holiday put a post on one of the local Facebook groups asking about the fires as she was having trouble sunbathing by the pool with ash falling from the sky – somehow I don’t think the Turkish fire brigade gave a stuff about tourist sunbathing.
I had pasta Bolognese with parmesan for dinner, early, which was tasty. I was hoping to get in the shower and go to bed early but my Mom had said they were going to pick up the food once the new fridge arrived and was working. My parents came round to pick up their fridge/freezer produce at gone 9pm, which I thought late for the arrival of a kitchen appliance but they had been for dinner and drinks in Jiks so were calling on their way home. I made them G&Ts before packing the stuff in to carrier bags (as we didn’t have the cooler box it all came in).
